Summary: Yu helps out the Detective Prince after he loses something important to him.
Author's notes: This is a crosspost from AO3 and ffnet.
This is a oneshot that takes place right before the September field trip.

Yu sighed as the whistle ended the soccer match. Daisuke had played without any feeling, his heart quite obviously not in the game. He could have scored them the shot that won them the game. Could have.

But he didn't.

Well, at least it was only a practice match, anyway. Yasogami hadn't hosted a real match in forever, so maybe he was justified in not putting much effort into it. Still, it ruffled Yu's feathers, so to speak, and when Yu tried to talk to the guy about it, he'd abruptly left the field, which left the silver-haired boy alone to deal with the cleanup. Still considering him an outsider, the others on the team didn't volunteer to help.

At least Kou didn't leave him to out to dry. Kou clapped him on the shoulder when he brought the soccer ball to the storage shed. "We'll corner Daisuke sometime this week," the dark-haired boy promised. "And wring it out of him, if we have to!"

Yu nodded. Whatever was Daisuke's problem was his problem, too.

"I think it's about girls," Yu said while they walked into the gym together, taking the fastest path to the changing rooms by going through the indoor basketball court. "You've seen his fans—and how he treats them."

"It's tough, being popular," Kou commented. "You'd know, right?" Kou punched him lightly on the arm.

Yu didn't dignify that with an answer.

They halted right at the edge of the basketball court, greeted by an unexpected sight.

A diminutive but familiar figure was standing before one of the hoops, holding a basketball in his hands. His dark blue hair was just a shade apart from Kou's. The boy turned away suddenly, shoulders hunching, when he realized he had been caught.

"Uh, no offense," Kou said slowly, "but I don't think this is your sport, Detective Prince. You're... kinda short."

It was strange to see the young detective Naoto Shirogane without his signature blue cap, but he was still recognizable, if only because of his slight frame and, well, height.

Naoto turned his head just enough to subject Kou to a glare that could wither healthy spring flowers. His face was as red as the Tiny Soul Tomatoes growing in Yu's garden... Yu wondered what the boy was doing here. He wasn't enrolled in any sports class, and besides, it was after school. He couldn't imagine that he was practicing his game.

Kou blanched upon receiving that death gaze. "Uh, we'll just be going then... Have fun?" He laughed nervously, but Yu shook his head to indicate that he should go on alone. Kou gave him a curious look, then headed onto the locker room without him.

Yu stayed behind because Naoto's problem was his problem, too. That's just the sort of person he was.

He waited for Naoto to speak first, but after an entire minute passed in absolute silence—Naoto didn't so much as shift his feet—it seemed like maybe the next Ice Age might come sooner.

Then, finally, Naoto choked out a "Go away."

Yu didn't go away. He had the patience of a rock waiting for moss to grow. Another moment passed before he asked what was wrong. His soft voice echoed and seemed like thunder in the quiet expanse of the court.

The young detective didn't move, just raised an arm and pointed his finger to the basketball hoop ten feet above them.

The Detective Prince's signature blue cap was perched precariously against the hoop and the backboard. And Naoto, being stubborn and a bit of a loner, probably decided not to ask for help in getting it down. Had he been throwing the basketball at it in the hopes of knocking it free?

Yu was just shy of six feet tall, but even if he jumped he wouldn't be able to reach it. He pondered the situation. Naoto hadn't moved, his posture stiff with quiescent frustration. In fact, a moment later the basketball suddenly rocketed out of Naoto's hands because he'd been gripping it so tightly. It might be lucky that he hadn't popped it.

They both watched the ball bounce several times. It stopped at the foot of the bleachers. Naoto stared at it almost forlornly, but made no move to retrieve it.

"Shirogane-kun," Yu said to get the boy's attention. When the young detective turned his head to look at him, Yu bent down on the floor of the court and cupped his hands together. He nodded his head up at the net, indicating he'd give the boy a boost to reach his cap.

Naoto turned his full body to face him... and simply stared.

"Come on," Yu encouraged. "Unless you want to give me a boost."

Naoto scowled and stepped forward. He lifted a foot into Yu's cupped hands, and Yu noted how thick the boot's heel was. The poor boy was quite short and trying to make up for it... It was vaguely amusing.

Yu lifted up and Naoto flailed. For a moment, he worried he'd drop the boy, but then Naoto managed to grab hold of the hoop's rim and then swiftly snatched his cap from where it had been stashed. Yu set him safely back on the ground, and then Naoto turned his back to him, hugging the cap and burying his face into it.

Yu kindly led the unresisting Naoto to the bleachers and sat him down. Naoto was holding the cap like it was his only hold on life. Yu waited for him to regain his composure.

When Naoto finally relaxed his grip on the cap, Yu took out a handkerchief and handed it out to him. The boy glared at it for several moments like it was a foreign object. Yu didn't put it away, just continued to hold it out until he finally took it.

"...Thank you," Naoto finally muttered after dabbing his eyes with a corner of the handkerchief. "My cap is... important to me." The cap was now resting in the boy's lap. His hands were still clutching it tightly as if it might grow wings and fly away.

Yu nodded. "You don't look the same without it."

Naoto sighed. "One of my more disreputable classmates took it from me... I did not see who it was... It happened rather fast... But I have my suspicions."

Yu smiled inwardly. Always with the suspicions, this boy was. Well, he was a detective, after all.

"It's important to me," Naoto repeated. "An heirloom, one could say..."

"I understand," Yu said. "Something to remember your family by? I have something like that, too."

The young detective's gray eyes turned curiously on him.

"You've already seen it," Yu added.

Naoto's expression became one of concentration. Moments later, he held up the somewhat damp handkerchief. "This. Your family name is embroidered on it. Narukami."

Yu smiled at him. "It's my dad's. My parents are away."

"Overseas," Naoto murmured.

Yu paused. Naoto had probably looked into his history, suspecting him in regards to the murder case... It could have been a frightening realization, but aside from the TV World and all that it represented, he had nothing much to hide. "Yeah. Won't see 'em until spring. And the time difference makes it difficult to call them, and they don't really respond to emails, so..." He took the handkerchief from Naoto's unresisting hand. "This is kind of all I have from them."

Naoto sighed, but didn't contribute an anecdote of his own.

They sat in silence for a bit. Naoto was looking better now. His face had relaxed from the scowl he had been wearing, and the flush on it had faded.

"Well," Yu said. My job here is done. He stood up. "I should get changed, so..." He was still in his soccer uniform. "You take care of yourself, okay?"

Naoto took a moment to answer. "...Narukami-senpai. Thank you."

"You're welcome." Yu gave him an easy smile.

"But I will discover your involvement in the case," Naoto promised.

The smile didn't waver on Yu's face. "I hope you do," he murmured before turning and walking away, very aware of the detective's eyes on him as he left.

Summary: People are being murdered once again in Inaba, the bodies strung up from telephone lines. At first people believe it's a copycat killer mimicking the gruesome murders from the previous year, but Yu Narukami and the Investigation Team suspect otherwise.
Author's notes: This is a crosspost from AO3 and ffnet.
This story takes place after Persona 4 Arena (P4AU and Dancing All Night haven't occurred because I wrote this before those games were out) and before Persona 4 Golden's Epilogue. This contains P4 spoilers and some minor references to P4A's story mode. This is a clean story with no shipping intended.

Yu sat across the table from his little cousin, Nanako. They were both idly watching the television, spending some silent time together before her bed time. He would have liked to help her with homework, but since summer break had just started, she had plenty of time to finish her assignments. It could wait. They had already spent an exhausting afternoon playing silly games with the stuffed animals Kanji had made for them, so it was time to relax. And beyond all that, today was Yu's first day back in town since Golden Week. He was curious about what had happened in Inaba since then, so they were watching the local news. Golden Week had been only about a month and a half ago, but he always liked to be well-informed, and the events of Golden Week itself had been so distracting that he hadn't had much time to pay attention to things during it.

A news flash interrupted their peace with a sudden, shocking announcement.

Death in Inaba.

Yu tensed as he listened to the report. Was it murder, again? The last string of serial killings to plague the town had started over a year ago, and Yu and his friends had barely put an end to it this spring. Was the respite really going to be so short-lived?

In his musings he hadn't noticed Nanako's reaction, and she changed the channel before he could catch what few details the media had discovered. He was about to ask her to change it back, but his heart softened at her troubled expression. The news of death meant her father, Dojima, would likely not come home tonight. Although she always put on a brave face, she'd worry about him out there working on the case.

Right now would be the perfect time for a Junes commercial to come on, but luck wasn't with Yu tonight, so he had to try and cheer the girl up on his own. He was good at it by now. Nanako was his cousin, but over the time spent in the Dojima household, they were now as close as siblings. She even called him 'big bro,' a title that he longed to live up to.

"It'll be all right," he told her.

"I'm so glad you're here, big bro!" Nanako smiled at him, her eyes bright and warm, her worries put aside for now.

"Let's make the boxed lunches for tomorrow," he suggested. They spent the rest of the evening before bedtime in the kitchen. Yu watched over her like a mother hen as she peeled and cut carrots for the kinpira gobo he'd planned to make. Nanako was a budding young chef, cooking almost every day for her father. Yu felt a kinship with her in that regard; his own family had often been away when he was growing up, leaving him to fend for himself. At least Dojima allowed Nanako to do the shopping as well. In Yu's experience, there was nothing worse to a hungry child than an empty refrigerator.

As a result, Yu wasn't a bad cook himself. In fact, he prided himself on being the best in his group of friends, though he'd never boast about it. That was why he'd volunteered to make the lunches for tomorrow, although his friends had tried to refuse his offer. He pointed out that they had served him during Golden Week, and that Nanako had already stocked the fridge, and they finally relented. He was secretly relieved about that. Yukiko, and Chie, and even Rise... they all had a rather dynamic way of cooking...

Yu took over the cooking when it came to stir-frying, although Nanako protested that she could do it. She probably could, at that, but she was only seven. He smiled and directed her to prepare the boxes while he took care of it. They were making several boxes, after all. He thought of other meals he had made for his friends before. Maybe one day he'd learn to make the perfect daigako imo.

When they were finished, Nanako looked tired from the long day of play, so Yu sent her to bed, volunteering to take care of the dishes himself. It would give him some time to think. He worked silently, humming the Junes theme to himself, when suddenly the house was filled by a sound as soft as rice pouring into a jar, a sound that made him pause.

It was raining.

Why did it always rain when he visited Inaba...? He couldn't help but feel uneasy. Would the Midnight Channel air once again? He recalled the death announced on the news, and resolved to watch the turned-off TV in his room that night.

Midnight came and went, and the TV remained featureless. Yu sighed in relief; he'd been holding his breath as the clock ticked away towards that dark hour.

So there is nothing supernatural going on, he thought to himself. He could sleep soundly, although maybe he'd have a nightmare about Golden Week. Had that all happened just last month? It was hard to believe...

He stared at the TV for a few more minutes as a thought occurred to him. Did he still have the power? He touched the TV... and his fingers went into the screen, causing a ripple of lights to cascade around them. He quickly pulled his fingers back with a shudder.

Yes, he still had the power to enter the TV World.

The next day Yu took Nanako to Junes, where they walked around and looked at all of the displays. Even after a year, the superstore was still the girl's favorite place to visit. Yu didn't mind, although he steered her gently away from the electronics department. The last time Nanako had entered the TV World, she had almost died. He couldn't risk that happening again. Junes had so many large-screen TVs around that accidentally falling into one was not impossible.

When it was lunchtime, they went to the food court. Yu bought a Topsicle for Nanako while they waited for the rest of his friends to arrive.

First, of course, was Yosuke, sporting a Junes apron since he worked there. They'd run into him earlier in the produce department, but he had been too busy with customers to do more than wave to Nanako. "I finally get a break!" he said, plopping down into the seat across from Yu in obvious relief. "They're having a buy-one, get-one sale on daikon..." He made a face, and Nanako giggled. "It's not funny! They work me to the bone!"

"I'm glad to see you too, Yosuke," Yu said, his eyes dancing. "Where's Teddie?"

Yosuke looked around in surprise. "Huh? He was right behind me! Aww, geez, where'd that bear get off to?" Yosuke stood up, albeit reluctantly. "Sorry, man, I'll go find him." Teddie was probably in his costume, entertaining children somewhere. He had become Junes' unofficial mascot and, for the most part, he really enjoyed the role. It fit his happy-go-lucky nature perfectly.

As if on cue, a cheerful voice rang out, saying, "Topsicles for everyone!" and Teddie appeared in his red-and-white striped bear costume. He skated towards them quickly, carrying far more Topsicles than his stubby hands should be able to carry. He stopped suddenly at the table, his big oval eyes becoming disappointed. "Nana-chan already has one? No fair, Sensei!"

"It's all right, Teddie," Yu said. "I'm sure Nanako-chan can have another."

"Are you sure, Sensei? We don't want Nana-chan to get a bearly-ache!"

"I hate to say it, but the bear does have a point," said Yosuke, eyeing the Topsicles himself with a calculating look. "Too many is bad for you—" Without another moment's hesitation, he swiped one out of Teddie's hand and unwrapped it and put it in his mouth.

"Yo-su-keee!" Teddie whined. "You could have asked! I would've given you one!" Teddie's eyes brightened. "Sensei, have one!" He shoved one under Yu's nose.

"Uh, thanks Teddie," Yu said, gingerly taking one with a green wrapper.

"No, thank YOU, Sensei!" Teddie replied, folding his hands behind his back. He was always happy to be of service, especially when it came to Yu.

They ate the Topsicles while talking about their favorite flavors until Chie and Yukiko arrived together, as they tended to do. The girls were best friends, after all.

"Yu! It's good to see you again!" Chie said. She was wearing a light green blouse, jean shorts, and sneakers.

"I hope you had a pleasant trip," Yukiko chimed in. She almost always wore red; today it was a red jumper with matching shoes and headband.

Before they even sat down, Yosuke pulled out Yu's bag of boxed lunches from under the table. "Well, now that everyone's here, let's see what Yu cooked up for us! At least we know it's edible." He shot a glance at Yukiko, who didn't seem to notice.

Yu nodded. "Nanako helped me. Didn't you?" He patted his cousin on the head and she nodded and blushed at the attention.

"But everyone's not here," Chie protested, putting aside the box Yosuke handed her. "Kanji-kun isn't here yet. We gotta wait for him."

"Come on," said Yosuke. "I've only got 10 minutes before my break ends. I can't wait much longer!"

"Like you couldn't wait to use the toilet back in the TV World?"

"That was like a year ago! Give me a break, Chie!"

Yu smiled to himself. If Yosuke and Chie could bicker as usual, then everything was fine in the world.

Just a few minutes later, Kanji arrived. "Hey senpai," he said. He glanced over everyone there. "Hey... Naoto's not here yet?"

"Of course that's the first thing you'd notice," said Yosuke, rolling his eyes.

"W-what's wrong with that?" Kanji growled. "I just haven't seen her since that damned Grand Prix thing ended, is all."

"Dude, Nanako-chan's here, don't use language like that!"

"I'll use whatever language I want, you—"

Chie headed off the budding argument. "Naoto-kun couldn't make it. She's on another case. But, honestly, I wonder if she'll be called in. You all heard about it, right? The murder. They didn't say who the victim was..."

Unconsciously, Yu drew Nanako closer to himself. "I don't know much about it. It happened last night, right? Teddie, do you know anything?"

"Why would I know anything, Sensei? I'm just an innocent bear!"

"You're 'bearly' innocent," Yosuke muttered. "Wanting to 'score' with the girls all the time."

"Hehe! Yosuke made a joke!"

"He meant in the TV World, Teddie," said Chie.

"Oh! I'm paws-itive nothing's going on over there!" Teddie beamed at everyone, oblivious to the fact that someone from their very town had died.

"They're saying it might be a copy-cat killer," Yukiko said. She looked mournfully down at her boxed lunch and picked at its contents with her chopsticks.

Yosuke glanced at Yu and Nanako. "Well, let's not talk about that," he said. Yu nodded gratefully at him. The little girl didn't need to be exposed to this. She had enough of it at home, the few times Dojima talked about his police work. "So, Nanako, do you and Dojima-san have any plans for the summer? I mean, with this guy here," – Yosuke indicated Yu – "you ought to be doing something."

"Even if Dojima-san can't take any time off, we'll make sure you have a fun summer," Chie chimed in. "Isn't that right, guys?"

"We need to go to the beach at least!" Yosuke declared. "Maybe we can get Naoto to come, and finally see her in that swimsuit. Right, Kanji?"

"Rise's probably had enough of beaches by now," Chie mused. "She's on a photo-shoot right now. That's why she's not here."

"Why don't we go to the movies in Okina?" Yu suggested. "That is, if everyone's free?" He glanced at Yosuke, realizing his friend was probably not free, and was sad he didn't think of that before making the suggestion.

"Hey, Yu, it's all right. You have fun with everyone," Yosuke said, poorly hiding his disappointment. "I really can't take off today. We've hired some summer help and I've got to train them."

"If you ain't going, lend me your motorcycle, senpai!" Kanji said. "I don't wanna bike it, 'specially if Teddie's going!"

"No way, man! I'm not letting my bike anywhere near there. Hanako might destroy it again!"

After further debate, they decided to go to the Samegawa riverbank instead. The flowers were in full bloom, so it would be an enjoyable walk. They could always see a movie another day.

That evening, after Nanako had been put to bed, Yu watched the news. The recent murder victim—the death was now classified as a murder—had been a third-year student at Yasogami High School. The cause of death was not released, but the body had been strung up over a telephone pole, in a style reminiscent of the three murders that took place last year. But it couldn't be the same killer; he was in police custody.

The telephone phone rang. Yu answered, and Dojima's deep voice came over the line. "I know I haven't been home lately. You probably know why. So take care of Nanako for me." Yu told him he would and prepared to cradle the phone—his uncle was always to the point—when Dojima suddenly spoke. "...Hey, did you happen to know the girl? She went to Yasogami. Her name was Hamano Michiyo."

"Hamano... I think she was in the class next to mine. I can ask my friends," Yu offered.

The line went silent for several long moments. Dojima had suspected him of involvement in the murders last year, and although that was in the past, sometimes Yu felt like an outsider to his uncle. Dojima told him that he was part of the family, but...

"Yeah. Please do," Dojima finally answered. "I want this case solved so I can go back to being a father."

Yu then felt a wave of sympathy towards his uncle. The last year had been hard on the police detective. Admitting his nephew, who was almost a stranger, into his house, trusting said nephew to take care of Nanako, spending days and days away from home working overtime due to the murders, almost losing Nanako when she was kidnapped and fell ill, and, on top of all that, discovering that his bumbling partner in the force was the one responsible for it all... It was a wonder he could bear it all.

"I'm glad you're back," Dojima said gruffly before hanging up.

The next day Yu planned to go into town and visit Daidara Metalworks to admire the owner's latest weaponry, but his cell phone rang when he was only a few feet out of the Dojima residence. It was Yosuke with an urgent message. "Yu! Something's seriously wrong here! Junes is closed!"

Yu couldn't understand what his friend said next; he seemed to be in hysterics. Yu asked him to calm down. He heard Yosuke take several deep breaths before he continued. "All right. Thanks, partner. I'm all right now. But it's really bad. Seems like there was another murder, and the victim was found caught in the phone lines around Junes. The store's crawling with police. I think I even saw Dojima-san around. Anyway, we can't do any business like this, so we closed the store for the day."

Yu didn't take long to come to a decision. "We should gather everyone who's available. You're right. There's something wrong here again. We can't sit around."

"Well, we can't meet up at Junes..."

"Then let's go to Aiya. I'll see you there soon."

They met in front of Aiya, the town's popular Chinese eatery, before going in: Yu, Yosuke, Chie, and Yukiko. Teddie was absent; Yosuke said he was on cleaning duty at the store until the police were done there. Kanji was busy helping his mother tend Tatsumi Textiles. After they all took a seat and ordered, Yu asked everyone for information.

"The first victim was one of our classmates," Yukiko said mournfully. "I didn't know her well, but it's still very sad."

"They've taken her boyfriend in for questioning," Chie added. "I heard he had a fight with her just the day before, so he might even be the prime suspect."

"But that doesn't explain this morning's victim," said Yosuke. "I'm so glad I slept in late... They say the body was right there in front of the store. Imagine going into work and remembering that every time I walked into Junes. Then every day wouldn't be great."

"Every day's HORRIBLE at your Junes!" said Yukiko, and she began laughing, a crazy, raucous laughter born more out of sadness than humor.

"Do you know who this victim was?" Yu asked the group once Yukiko had calmed down.

"No, but... I overheard it was another high school student." Yosuke looked miserable. "What if it's someone else from Yasogami? That would be two in just two days."

"I heard something," Chie said. When she didn't continue, everyone looked at her until she did. She made a defensive gesture. "It's just a rumor! It might not be anything." Yu asked her to continue anyway. "Well, there's this new revenge hotline that's been advertising recently. It just started since you've come back here. That's why I thought it was suspicious."

Now everyone turned to look at Yu, but he remained calm. He was almost used to being the source of these problems...

Well, I haven't been to the Velvet Room, he thought, so maybe it's not related to Shadows or Personas.

"What is this 'revenge hotline'?" he asked. "I haven't heard of it."

"There are fliers around town," Chie said. "There's one on the part-time job board. The one right outside here! Come on, I'll show you."

They left Aiya and went to the board. Among the part-time job listings that Yu was very familiar with was an incongruous white poster with big black lettering. It read:

"Do You Want Revenge? Call Us. We Make It Happen."

It was followed by a phone number.

"What a horrible thing," Yukiko murmured.

"Does... anyone want to call?" Chie asked. "Yosuke, you call!"

"Hell no!" Yosuke shouted, flinching. "I'm not going to volunteer for this! Do I look like Naoto?"

"I don't think we should risk it," Yu said. "I'll ask my uncle if he can trace the number."

"Speaking of Naoto-kun, maybe we should call her?" Chie suggested. "She might have access to more information than Dojima-san."

"We don't know if this is actually related to the murders," Yosuke pointed out.

"That's true, but I feel like she needs to be in the loop. Inaba is her home, too, even if she's away right now."

"I'll leave that to you," Yu said.

"Should we ask around town about the hotline?" Yukiko asked.

"And draw attention to it? I dunno..." said Yosuke. He looked at Yu. "It's your call, dude."

"Let's wait," he said. "Now, Yukiko."

"Yes, Yu-kun?" Yukiko adjusted her red hairband; she hadn't expected to be addressed directly.

"Listen at the inn for anything that sounds important. I'm counting on you. Yosuke. I'd like you to ask Teddie again if he's noticed anything odd about the TV World. And my job will be my uncle. He'll have to know something."

Dojima came home late that night, but Yu had stayed up, waiting for him in the living room. "Don't you have school tomorrow?" Dojima asked upon seeing him. "Oh, right. It's summer. The seasons change and I hardly notice."

"How's the case?" Yu asked, not wasting any time.

Dojima looked at him sharply. "Why do you want to know? Are you planning to get involved again?"

"One of the victims went to Yasogami."

Dojima splayed his fingers over his forehead. "It's like last year all over again." He sighed. "Look, I know I can't stop you from investigating, but be careful, all right?"

Yu promised he would. "My friends and I can handle it."

"You did good with Adachi, I'll give you that," Dojima admitted. "Don't know how you found him. Or Nanako, for that matter..."

Dojima's countenance became troubled as the worst memories from last year came back to him.

To change the subject, Yu asked what Dojima knew of the current case. "Nothing special, really," the detective answered. "You're right, the second victim—you've heard about that, right?—was also a student at Yasogami High. Naoki Konishi."

For several moments, Yu couldn't fathom what he'd just been told. Bile rose within him, and he began to sweat. He found his throat almost too dry to speak. "No..."

"I see you know what that means," Dojima continued. "There's going to be hell to pay. The Konishi family suffered enough last year."

Saki Konishi had been one of the victims last year... and now her little brother was slain by a new killer?

"And that makes two Yasogami students," Dojima went on. "If someone's out there targeting students, we've got to stop them, ASAP. In fact, I've only stopped in to pick up something. It'll be an all-nighter for me..." He looked at Yu directly. "You tell all your friends to stay home at night, all right?"

Yu asked him for more information before he left, and Dojima grudgingly obliged. "Well, Hamano Michiyo's boyfriend has an alibi, so he's already been released. I think he knows something, but he hasn't been much help." Dojima took out some pictures from a file folder and showed them to Yu. "The victims' bodies were both up on utility poles... Damn, it really is like last year. The coroner can't determine the C.O.D., just like Mayumi Yamano and Saki Konishi. But we know it can't be Adachi, however the hell he did it. He's locked up tight."

"Maybe we should talk to him anyway," Yu suggested.

"You want to? I sure as hell don't. I've nothing to say to that guy." Dojima's bitterness towards his ex-partner was apparent. "That damned fool thinks it's all a game."

Yu mentioned the revenge hotline, and Dojima seemed surprised to hear about it. "Probably just a prank. The things kids these days get up to..." Yu decided to stop his questioning there. He didn't want to worry his uncle too much, nor keep him from his work.

The ring of his cell phone awoke Yu bright and early. It was Yosuke, and he seemed to be in hysterics once again. "It's Chie! She's in the hospital!"

Yu rapidly blinked the sleep out of his eyes. "What happened?"

"I don't know—Look, let's get over there! We've got to know if she's okay!"

Yu agreed, and the two of them met at the hospital. After obtaining visitor's passes, they were ushered into her room.

"Chie!" Yosuke shouted. The girl on the hospital bed turned her head to look at him, but it seemed to take her an inhuman amount of effort. Whatever happened had exhausted her. There was an IV attached to her arm, but the doctor had told them that her condition was stable.

"Q-quiet, you..." she murmured from the hospital bed. She smiled weakly at his concern.

"What happened, Chie!?" Yosuke yelled, and Yu told him to calm down. "I'm calm, I'm calm... Damn it, Yu, how can you be so calm!? This is Chie!"

"Shouting at her isn't going to help."

"All right... that's right..." Yosuke was breathing heavily in his panic.

Chie had a larger smile on her face now. The medicine or her exhaustion was keeping her light-headed, but oddly cheerful. "I'm glad... you're here... Now I know... how Nanako-chan felt..."

"Can you tell us what happened?" Yosuke begged as quietly as he could manage.

"The phone rang at my house... I answered it, and then... I don't know... Something attacked me from the phone."

"Something came out of the phone?"

"But Tomoe protected me... and I fell down. Now... I'm here."

"They said you're going to be fine," Yu said.

"Good... Thank you, Yu-kun... It feels good hearing it from you..."

"Get some rest," he told her, and she fell asleep while trying to nod.

"Chie," Yosuke murmured softly.

Yu guided him out of the room.

"The phone," Yosuke said. "Do you think... No, it has to be. It has to do with that revenge hotline! You think so too, right? But who would want revenge on Chie? She doesn't have any enemies who'd go that far, does she?"

Yu said nothing. He had a faint idea...

He told Yosuke to inform the others about what had happened. He had his own investigating to do.

At a clothing store in Okina City, Yu found the woman he was looking for: Ai Ebihara. She had a poor young fool trailing behind her, carrying all of her shopping bags. Yu remembered being in his position last year.

"Oh, it's you," Ai said upon seeing Yu, her eyes lighting up. "I heard you were back in town. Come to pay your respects?"

"I need to talk to you." Yu glanced at the boy with her shopping bags.

"You," she told the boy. "Get out of here. Narukami can take care of this."

"B-but Ai-chan!" the boy protested. "We were going to go to lunch..."

Ai spread her hands in a shrug that clearly said, 'not my problem.' "He's an old friend, and if he's asked me out, he's asked me out. Tough luck."

The boy reluctantly left...

"So, where do you want to go?" Ai asked.

Yu eyed the shopping bags he'd now have to carry for her and gauged their weight. "The Chagall Cafe," he said, naming the closest place.

"My, so sophisticated!" Ai said. "I could do with a latte."

After they'd ordered a drink—Yu went with a soda; he needed to stay conscious—he came straight to the point. "Ai-san, do you know about that revenge hotline?"

She seemed surprised that he'd asked. "Well, yeah. Who hasn't, by now?" She waved a hand, her pink-painted fingernails catching the light.

"Have you called it?" he asked, bluntly ignoring her charms.

"H-hey!" she said, pulling her hand to her chest. "What kind of woman do you think I am?"

He looked her in the eyes until she gave in. "F-fine, so what if I did? Kou-kun asked her out! He's supposed to ask me out! Not her!"

Yu slouched in his chair, his suspicion confirmed. The fact did not cheer him. "I thought you weren't interested in Kou."

"I-I'm not, but it's the principle of it! I'm so much more attractive than that Satonaka! Not that it matters, anyway. That hotline is just a joke."

"It's not a joke," he told her. "Chie is in the hospital."

"What!" Ai gasped.

Yu explained what had happened.

"But... I only said I wanted her to break out in hives," Ai said into her latte when he was done. "I didn't want her to die!"

"Tell me what happened when you called the hotline."

"It was pretty weird... They asked my name, and who I wanted revenge against. And I told them what I'd wanted. And they said it'd be done."

"Who asked? A man or a woman?"

"Oh, it was a robotic voice. It sounded strange, like a computer."

"Ai-san, please don't call it again."

"I won't," she promised.

After leaving the cafe, Yu called Dojima. "Uncle, the victims. Check their phone records."

"What? Yu? What are you talking about? Hey, give me a moment here, it's my nephew." Dojima's voice sounded far off; he was talking to someone else. When he came back to the line, he ordered Yu to explain.

"The phone records at both the Michiyo and Konishi households. Who called them the night before they died? I... I think it's important."

"It wouldn’t be difficult to get," said Dojima, "but I don't see why it would be important. I don't have time to waste—"

"Make time," Yu interrupted. "I need to know."

There was silence on the other end for some time. Finally, Dojima said, "I heard what happened to your friend... I'll do what I can."

Yu walked down the shopping district on his way home when he saw a shimmering blue door appear between the bookstore and Daidara Metalworks. He hadn't seen that in a while... Perhaps it was time to pay his respects to its residents.

Upon entering the Velvet Room, one's first sensation was of the color blue.

"Welcome to the Velvet Room," a warm female voice said.

Then, details would emerge. A long liquor cabinet to the left, a glass brandy decanter open on the top shelf. Directly in front, a small, short table with a blue tablecloth, and behind it, comfortable velvet cushioned seats. Seated to the viewer's right, an elegant woman wearing a blue chauffeur coat and black leggings, smiling with golden eyes and wavy silver-yellow hair. The windows outside this limousine showed nothing but indistinct, blurred scenery rushing past as it moved on its continuous journey.

The woman spoke. "My heart might have skipped a beat to see you here again. Did your heart do the same...?"

"Margaret..." Yu said.

The woman's playful smile faded. "You will soon face your greatest challenge yet." She paused. "Have I told you that before...? Regardless, please be prepared, Yu Narukami."

The vision faded. Margaret's voice followed him out of the Velvet Room. "I'll be watching..."

Yu spent the rest of the afternoon with Nanako, waiting for Dojima to get back to him. He answered the phone once; Yosuke was still frantic about what happened to Chie. He reported that there was still no activity in the TV World. "Teddie says the Shadows seem restless, but that's not unusual."

"We'll meet up tomorrow," Yu promised, "and go over what we've learned."

"All right, partner..." Yosuke said before hanging up.

Yu's manner must have been tense when he put the phone down, because Nanako asked him what was wrong. He wondered if he should tell her about Chie, but he decided against it; he didn't want her to worry.

The phone rang again some time later. It was Dojima. "Don't know how you knew," he said, "but... yeah, there was something in the phone records you had me look into. The second victim had been called by an unlisted number not long before the estimated time of death... It traces to a place in Okina City, but it's an abandoned house. There's not even a working phone line there."

Yu asked for the address.

"The address? You shouldn't be poking around into this..." Dojima hesitated for several long moments. "Yu. Your friend, Satonaka... I checked her house too, and it was also called by this number. Tell me what it means."

Yu repeated the number he'd seen advertised on the revenge hotline poster.

"How in the world did you know the number?" Dojima exclaimed. "Yu, if you know something, God help me...!"

"Please give me the address."

The next morning, Yu called Yosuke, Kanji, and Yukiko to meet him at Okina City. When they arrived, he told them his findings.

"So this hotline actually works? And someone called for revenge on Chie!?" Yosuke shouted in his frustration. "W-what the hell, man!"

"Who'd do such a thing...?" While Yosuke was angry about it, Yukiko had retreated into herself. She was perhaps more introspective than she normally was. "My Shadow might have called, had it been able to..."

"You had nothing to do with it," Yu assured her. He hadn't named Ai Ebihara as the one responsible, in case Yosuke decided to call the hotline on her in counter-revenge.

"If you're not feeling well, Yukiko, you don't have to come with," Yosuke said with sudden concern. "We guys can handle this, right?"

"Damn right!" said Kanji. He was still panting slightly from riding his bicycle all the way to Okina.

"I'm already here," she said demurely. "And I have to be here... for Chie."

Using a map, they navigated to the address Dojima had given Yu. The location seemed to be an abandoned house on a run-down street. By the look of it, it seemed no one had lived there for years. Trash was piled up in the yard as people used the lot as a dumping ground. A window was smashed open, and the shutters were rotting apart. The garden under the windowsill contained only the memories of flowers. Several shingles were falling off the roof, and the paint was peeling up in several areas.

"What a dump," said Yosuke, voicing everyone's opinion. "Still, I could see someone using it as a secret hideout."

"We're here. Now what?" Kanji asked, looking at Yu.

"We... go inside." Yu navigated past the trash in the yard and to the front door. He gingerly tried the doorknob, but the door was locked.

"Step aside," said Kanji, and he slammed his shoulder into the door several times until it gave way.

"We could have found another way in," said Yosuke, watching Kanji rub his shoulder.

"Tch, we're in now. Who cares how?"

Yu hesitated before following the others in. "This feels familiar..." he said to himself.

"Are you feeling deja vu?" Yukiko asked. "I feel it sometimes when I meet new people, but I think it's because I work at an inn. I often meet people I've seen before."

"I'm not sure," said Yu.

"It's as bad inside as out," Yosuke warned. "Watch out for the hole in the floor there. Anyone thought to bring a flashlight?"

Yu took out a detective's badge and pressed a switch on it, and it produced a bright yellow light. "Nifty! Where'd you get that?" Yosuke asked. Yu didn't reply.

"Move it back over to the left, Senpai!" said Kanji. "Yeah, there! It's a damned phone!"

"Didn't Dojima-san say there wasn't any phone service here? That makes no sense." Yosuke picked up the phone and put it to his ear. "Yeah, nothing. Man, look. The phone line's been cut anyway." He put the phone back down.

"Maybe the line works, and someone's bringing in their own phone set and cables," Yukiko suggested.

"Well, we can't really test that. We've only got our cell phones. Let's look around some more."

"Smells like cat piss," Kanji muttered as he opened a door to another room.

Aside from stray animals, there didn't seem to be any signs of frequent, or even rare, visitors to the house. It really was just an abandoned building.

Suddenly, the phone rang, startling everyone. "I thought you said it wasn't connected!" Kanji shouted at Yosuke.

"I did! What the hell!" Yosuke scrambled to the phone. He reached out to pick it up, but stopped, looking at Yu. "Uhh... Should I?"

Yu paused tensely for a moment before nodding.

"No good," said Yosuke. "They hung up. But how the heck is this working?"

"It's that night at the Amagi Inn all over again," said Kanji. "This place is giving me the damn creeps!"

"Huh?" Yukiko asked.

"Uh, nevermind," said Yosuke.

The phone rang again, and Yosuke answered again. "Yeah, hello?"

They waited, watching him, but he just cradled the phone. "It's nothing. I don't even hear the phone click on the other end. It's just... nothing."

"I wish Chie was here," Yukiko murmured, hugging herself.

"Yeah, I don’t think we're gonna find anything, partner. I guess it was a nice try, but—" The phone rang again. "Oh, I am not answering that again!"

Yu picked it up and put the receiver to his ear. A distorted voice spoke to him. "So, you've returned... I knew you couldn't stay away."

Yu breathed in sharply. "Who...?"

The voice continued. "How do you like what you've brought to this town?"

"Who are you?" Yu demanded.

"Come in and find me... If you'd really like to know..."

The old television set in the corner of the room flickered on, showing only static. "Whoa, man, it's not plugged in... It shouldn't be doing that!" Yosuke exclaimed.

A shadowy figure appeared on the television. Hiding in the static, its identity was impossible to make out. It seemed to move towards the camera. "Come after me, if you dare, Yu Narukami..." it said. Then the television abruptly turned off.

They stared at the television for over a minute, as if it might do another trick.

"It knew your name," Yukiko said slowly, finally breaking the silence.

"What are you waiting for? We outta go in there and show him not to mess with us!" Kanji declared. He stepped towards the television, his arms twitching with excitement. "It's gotta be the killer, right?"

"We shouldn't," said Yukiko. "Teddie always says we should never enter a strange TV."

"But it's mocking us..." Yosuke sighed. "You're right, Yukiko. We can't get caught up in the moment. Besides, we aren't prepared. Do you have any idea why it's after you, partner?"

Yu was still staring at the television screen, as if he hadn't even heard.

"Yo, Senpai?" Kanji waved his hand in front of Yu's face, and finally Yu blinked and returned his full attention to his friends.

"No," he said, his face troubled. "I have no idea."

"It's not raining, and it's nowhere near midnight," Yukiko noted. "But that looked a lot like the Midnight Channel, didn't it?"

They visited the TV World the next day. Because Rise was not available, they relied on Teddie's "sniffer" to find out where that stranger was within it.

"It's no good. I don't sense anything different," Teddie said. "I'm beary sorry."

"You don't sense anything at all?" Yosuke asked.

"No one has been here since the Grand Prix."

"Maybe we should take Teddie to that strange TV?" Yukiko suggested.

"No," said Yu. "We can't risk a new entrance, even with Teddie."

"Sensei..." said Teddie.

"I'll think of something," Yu promised them. "For now, I want everyone to focus on the revenge hotline. Listen for other stories of people using it, and take down any posters you see for it. It's dangerous."

That evening, Yu spent quality time with Nanako. A suspicion had been forming in his mind all day, ever since the trip to that abandoned house. He felt that time was short; there was likely to be another victim soon. He had to do something.

"Big bro... you look lost."

"Lost? But I'm right here..." He hugged Nanako close, saddened that his thoughtful demeanor was worrying her.

The revenge hotline frightened him. Anyone could be a target. That boy he'd seen with Ai Ebihara could call for revenge on him for taking Ai away from him... What if the hotline targeted him by attacking Nanako? Could he convince Nanako not to answer the phone? That was ridiculous... She needed to answer it in case Dojima called. Maybe he could buy a phone set that revealed calling numbers and teach her to answer only safe numbers.

And Yosuke had several enemies since he was the son of Junes' manager. Unsatisfied employees or customers, enemies of the Junes brand, or anyone else he might have offended with his caustic sense of humor.

Yukiko was probably safe... But there was that television producer she'd offended last year, who'd wanted to do a special on her family's inn being haunted, so there was always a chance.

Kanji had plenty of enemies from the biker gang he'd ejected from the town.

Was the phenomenon limited to Inaba? Because Rise surely had enemies in the idol business, and Naoto had likely made enemies during her detective work...

"Big bro...?"

"Hmm? Oh..." He looked down at Nanako, clinging to him. He forced a smile. "Did I ever tell you what my new school is like?" he asked.

"No! I bet you made lots of friends there!" She beamed up at him, and he put aside his dark thoughts and focused on spending time with her.

At Yu's urging, everyone spent the next day working independently on the case.

Yukiko heard from one of the chefs at her family's inn that a maid had tried calling the revenge hotline against her ex-husband, but that the number wasn't in service.

Both Yosuke and Teddie worked all day at Junes. They'd also overheard some talk about the hotline. By all reports, it seemed the hotline was suddenly out of business.

Kanji spent the day tearing down posters for the hotline all over the town. He also went to Okina City to make sure none had made their way there.

And Yu... He made his own plans.

In the hospital, Chie was slowly recovering. She could walk without help now, but the doctors wanted her to stay with them for a few more days, just to make sure she was fully-recovered.

It sucked. She was craving a steak bowl from Aiya... even at this hour.

She could hear the rain outside. It was always difficult for her to sleep during the rain. She remembered the Midnight Channel too vividly. She hadn't planned on being awake at midnight this night, nor facing the television that was set up in the corner of the room, but it just sort of happened.

She saw the television flicker on, with that staticky sound that was all too familiar.

She blinked at the screen. "No, not again," she whispered. Her tired eyes tried to make out what was being shown.

It was... Yu-kun.

Chie bolted upright in the hospital bed.

"Hahaha," said the boy on the television. It was a dry, humorless laugh. "It's me, the hero of Inaba."

No, that's not Yu-kun, Chie thought. It can't be...

"How well do you know me?" he continued. "Not well enough, I'm afraid. You didn't know I'd do this, did you?"

Chie frantically searched for her cell phone at the bedside table, knocking over a glass of water in the process. When she found it, she began to dial Yu's number with trembling hands.

"That's all right," said the figure that was not Yu. "We have plenty of time. We're going to stay together forever. From now until eternity."

Chie finished dialing and put the phone to her ear. "The number you are trying to reach is out of service. For more information, press one." She swore and hung up.

The figure on the television waved and turned around and began to walk nonchalantly away. He looked over his shoulder at the camera. "I'll see you around."

The television turned off.

Chie called Yosuke next, but the line was busy. Yukiko was also busy, and Kanji wasn't answering. In desperation, she called Naoto, even though Naoto was too removed from the scene to do anything.

"Hello? Chie?" the young detective's voice came over the line.

"Thank God!" Chie wept into the phone.

"Ch-Chie? What's the matter?"

"I'm sorry if I woke you," Chie said between gasps for breath, "but something really serious just happened over here and Yu-kun was just on the Midnight Channel and—"

"One moment please, Chie," Naoto requested. Chie could hear Naoto moving around in the background. By the rustle of paper, she was probably preparing to take notes. "All right. Now, from the beginning..."

They had all seen the Midnight Channel. They all knew what it represented.

In Yu's absence, Yosuke organized the remaining available Investigation Team members—himself, Teddie, Kanji, and Yukiko—to meet at the Junes food court so early in the morning that he had to unlock the store's side door because it wasn't yet open.

He stared blankly at the table, eating a Topsicle without tasting it, waiting for everyone to join him. He couldn't remember a time he felt more lost. Even when Saki-senpai had died, he hadn't felt this ill. After that Midnight Channel last night...

"Where are the others?" asked a voice he hadn't expected to hear.

"N-Naoto?" Yosuke sat up. "What are you doing here?" He noticed the bags under her silver-gray eyes. "You look beat."

"You might wish to look in a mirror yourself," said the ace detective, tipping her signature blue cap at him and taking the seat across from him. "Chie-senpai told me the situation last night, and I came as soon as I could. I slept during the train ride, but only lightly."

"Yeah, I couldn't really sleep myself..." Yosuke admitted. "Yukiko and Kanji should be on their way. I've got Teddie in the TV World, trying to sniff out where Yu is."

"We know him well," said Naoto, "so we should be able to find him, if he's there."

"Yeah... Let's hope Teddie is up to it."

Yukiko and Kanji arrived soon, but with half the team missing, the table felt empty. Yosuke made a half-hearted joke about Kanji being glad Naoto was there, but Kanji wasn't taking the bait and the joke fell flat.

"Well, let's get to business, then," Yosuke said with a sigh. "If Yu was on the Midnight Channel, then he's in the TV World."

"But who put him in there?" Yukiko asked. "No one knows about it except us."

"Maybe some of the Shadow Operatives?" Yosuke asked. He looked at Naoto, who had the most experience with the Shadow Operatives out of all of them.

Naoto shook her head. "Although they have the power, I highly doubt they are involved. Mitsuru-san has great respect for Yu-senpai."

"Namatame is still around," Yosuke said. "I still don't trust that guy..."

"We are getting ahead of ourselves." Naoto began to write in a notebook. "First we must establish when Yu-senpai was last seen."

"Let's see..." said Yosuke. "Yesterday he had us all working on our own."

"We didn't even meet up at all," said Yukiko. "Did anyone see him? I didn't."

After some discussion, it turned out that Yosuke had been the last to see him at about 8 o’clock the previous night. "Yeah, he was at Junes. I asked what he needed, and he said he was just buying some groceries for a meal that Nanako-chan wanted to make for tomorrow—well, today. Since it was so late, he'd gone shopping without her. Dojima-san doesn't like her being out after dark, even with company."

"I'll call Nanako-chan," said Yukiko, taking out her cell phone. "She should have seen him last night, when he came home."

"That is, if he came home," Naoto said, assuming a thoughtful pose with her hand on her chin.

"Hi, Nanako-chan? Yes, hello. It's Yukiko Amagi. Yes, you remember! Of course you can come to the hot springs anytime you want! Oh, well, we were wondering when you'd last seen your big brother? Not since yesterday morning? Umm, so you didn't send him out grocery shopping last night? I see. No, it's all right, Nanako-chan. Take care now!" She put down her phone and turned to the group, her eyes downcast. "You probably got all that—Nanako-chan hasn't seen him, and she never asked him to go shopping for anything either. So, Yosuke..."

"Hey! I'm not lying! He really told me that!" Yosuke exclaimed.

"So... Yu-senpai lied to you." Naoto sighed. "Perhaps our leader has something to hide."

"Not everyone's got dirty secrets, Naoto!" Yosuke said indignantly. "Yu's a great guy, and you know it! He's my partner!"

"I'm not impeaching his character," Naoto said carefully. "I am merely suggesting that he had something on his mind. Do you recall what his Shadow said?"

"His... Shadow?"

"What appeared on the Midnight Channel last night. According to Chie-senpai, it said, 'How well do you know me?' It ended with, 'You didn't know I'd do this, did you?'"

"Are you saying... Senpai went in the TV on his own?" Kanji said, dumbfounded. "Shit, Senpai's smarter than that!"

"His desire to protect us is quite strong," said Naoto. "Perhaps he felt some sense of desperation after Chie-senpai was targeted..."

"Damn!" Yosuke swore. "And now he's stuck in the TV World... We're gonna have to save him! Yukiko, what's the weather forecast!?"

"Oh, umm... It's supposed to be foggy tomorrow."

Naoto's eyes widened. "Then what are we waiting for?"

"Yeah!" said Kanji. "Let's go... and save Senpai!"

Teddie greeted them enthusiastically. He'd easily sensed Yu's presence. "Sensei is this way!"

As they followed him, they wondered what sort of place Yu's inner self would create. When Yukiko had been thrown into the TV World, her self had created a castle because she'd desired a knight to come rescue her from her responsibilities. Kanji's self had created a steamy bathhouse, representative of his desire to be accepted for who he was. Rise's self had created a strip club, reflecting her wish to be seen beyond her idol glamour. And Naoto's self had created a secret base, reminiscent of her childhood dreams.

"Ta-daaa. Here it is!" Teddie exclaimed, stopping suddenly.

They spread out to see what stood before them.

"It's... a town?"

At first, it looked like an ordinary neighborhood in an ordinary city, but upon closer examination, one could see that something was off about it. None of the houses matched, as if each house had come from a different neighborhood and had been individually uprooted and transplanted there. The streets were broken and uneven, as if they, too had been picked up and placed there from somewhere else. Every house had a different style of fencing, a different type of mailbox, a different color scheme, an overall completely different look to them... Some of the buildings seemed to be apartment rooms entirely detached from their complexes.

Teddie didn't want to go in. "Maybe... I'll be your backup? Just like in the old days?" he said hopefully.

"Well, it's true we don't have Rise-san," Naoto murmured, and Yosuke agreed. "Just stay in contact!"

They began to walk down the broken street, carefully navigating over gaps in the sidewalk.

"Kind of reminds me of Adachi's world," said Yosuke.

"It's more normal, somehow," said Yukiko. Adachi's world had been a dark and frightening representation of Inaba, perhaps a reflection of how trapped he had felt in the small town. But this place... The sky was bright and sunny, but the sky also looked like a quilt. It looked as if someone had taken pictures of the sky at different places and then stapled them together.

"It's like a time capsule," Naoto mused. "There are no people, and no wildlife... These houses are memories..."

"What do you mean?" Yosuke asked, but Naoto didn't explain.

Yukiko shaded her eyes against the bright sun. "How many houses are there, do you think? This road seems to go on for a while."

"By my count, we've passed a dozen so far," said Naoto. "I worry that there are no Shadows."

"Worry? Isn't that a good thing?" Yosuke asked.

"Well, maybe it means we're going to run into something big," said Yukiko in a voice barely above a whisper, as if the Shadows could hear.

"What the hell!" Yosuke suddenly yelled and dashed forward. "It's that house!"

Sandwiched between two other houses was one eerily to familiar to Yosuke, Kanji, and Yukiko.

"It's that dump in Okina!" Kanji exclaimed.

It was a completely restored version—it had a freshly-mowed lawn, a complete roof, bright pink flowers under the windowsill—but it was definitely the same house.

"Oh, that place..." Yukiko murmured. "What's that doing here?"

"What place is this?" Naoto asked, and they informed her that this was the house that the revenge hotline seemed to call to. They told her of their trip to it, and what happened there.

"Yu-kun said it was familiar to him when we went inside..." Yukiko recalled.

"I suspect he might have lived there at some time in his life," said Naoto. "That's what this neighborhood is. All of these houses... are places he used to live. He's told me before that his family moved often. His parents are employed in a job that requires it."

"The hell? That's a lot of houses..." Kanji muttered. "Surprised he remembers so many."

"Do you think... Should we try entering one of the houses?" asked Yukiko.

"I wouldn't," said Naoto. "They appear to be mainly for display. Besides, something different is up ahead."

The neighborhood gave way to a school. It wasn't Yasogami; by its placard it was an elementary school. The gate was locked, so they walked past it, only to find that the street had several other schools on it.

"It's creepy to see a school with no students. Have you ever visited Yasogami on an off day?" Yosuke asked.

"Houses, and now these unfamiliar schools. What do they mean to Yu-kun?" Yukiko asked. "They're memories, but why make his world about it?"

After another half an hour of walking past different schools, they came across something familiar. "Hey, it's Yasogami!"

It looked exactly like the high school in Inaba that they all went to. "Heh, seeing this in the TV World reminds me of Labrys," said Yosuke, "I wonder how she's doing?"

"Don't remind me of that," growled Kanji. "Might think I'm dreaming again..."

Out of curiosity, they approached the high school, but when Yosuke touched the gate to try and push it open, the gate suddenly dissolved into fog. Soon after, the entire school disappeared too.

"What the hell is this?" Kanji pulled out a pair of glasses and put them on, but they didn't remove the fog as they once did. "Teddie! Your glasses ain't working!" he shouted.

"Wh-what!?" Teddie's voice filtered into their heads from far away through his Persona. "Bear with me! Oh, I wish I'd come with you guys! Senseiiii!"

The Investigation Team drew closer together to face the fog.

"You still have those glasses?" Yosuke sounded incredulous. "We haven't needed them since spring."

"Wh-what of it? They look good on me..." Kanji seemed embarrassed.

"So you keep them on you just in case you ever need to look cool? You're unreal, sometimes."

Kanji opened his mouth to reply when Teddie interrupted. "Oh! I sense Sensei! Just keep moving forward!"

"Fine, fine, but which way's forward...?" Yosuke muttered.

The fog cleared, revealing an empty beach. Sitting on the shore and watching the slowly-crashing waves was Yu. The water was mostly calm, and the sky was overcast.

"Yu-kun," Yukiko whispered.

Apparently lost in thought, he didn't seem to notice their presence.

"Hey, uh, partner?" Yosuke tried. "We're here for you."

Naoto motioned everyone back. She took her gun out of its holster and then slowly approached Yu from behind. "Senpai?" she said, moving closer. She could almost touch him...

"Naoto!" Kanji shouted. "Dammit, get back!"

Yu tried to stand up, and fell face-forward into the sand. From his body came a black fog that convalesced into his shape—his Shadow self.

"How nice," the Shadow said in a distortion of Yu's voice. "They've all come for you. Even the Detective Prince, who wasn't even in town..."

"Yu-senpai!" Naoto called. "You know what you have to do!"

The Shadow laughed. "Not so smart after all, are you? You don't think he hasn't already tried to accept me?"

"Senpai's strong, but... he's hurting too?" Kanji asked. "We've all gone through this before."

"I am Yu, and he's me... He already knows it! He's already told me, 'I accept you,' and 'I accept that you're a part of me.' But are words really enough? Words without meaning are just that!"

"Urgh," said Yu from his place in the sand. He seemed to have given up; he made no move to even look at his Shadow.

"You won't get out of this so easily," the Shadow told him, kicking sand over him. "You won't be the hero this time. No, no, no. You can't be the hero when you're the enemy!"

Yu didn't answer.

"Come on, partner! You can't just sit there and let it run its mouth!" Yosuke shouted.

"The enemy?" Naoto asked.

The Shadow laughed, hearing her. "Yes, the enemy was inside him all along. I am him, and he is me!"

"Shit, make some sense!" Kanji shouted, brandishing a deck chair.

The Shadow laughed again. "How well do you know your dear Yu-kun? How much do you know how he fears loneliness? How he fears he'll be forgotten? Let me show you!"

The ocean vanished, replaced by a school classroom. A little girl wearing a backpack was talking to a gray-haired child—a much younger version of Yu.

"Yu-kun," she said. "Are you really moving? But we just met..."

The scene faded into another. It showed the front gate of one of the schools they had seen earlier. A small boy was talking to little Yu. "You're leaving? Where are you going? You'll be back, right?"

Another scene, this time little Yu was crying in front of two adult figures: his parents. "What! You lost Baby Bear?" his mother said. "How did you lose him? You let someone at school borrow him? Yu! You knew we were moving! Well, it's too late now. You'll just have to live without him."

The next scene was a playground. Little Yu was surrounded by other kids. One of them said, "Oh, you're the new student everyone's talking about. What, you're only going to be here for a month? There's no point in being friends, then."

Another student in the group added, "I don't want you on my baseball team if you're just going to leave."

The scene changed again: Yu was in a classroom, and a girl was speaking to him. "Sou-chan, you're really leaving? That's okay... We'll be friends forever!"

The word 'forever' echoed on...

The visions ended, and the beach returned. The Shadow said mournfully, "When Yu moved, he wrote to that one, but she never wrote back."

"Damn," said Kanji. "Kid's had it rough..."

"'Out of sight, out of mind,'" the Shadow quoted. "But that's all in the past, right?" The Shadow looked down at Yu, who still hadn't stirred from his place in the sand. "I mean, your new friends, they'd never forget you... would they?"

"Hey, we came all this way for him!" Yosuke interrupted with feeling. "Yu's my partner. We're friends forever. I don't care what some little princess told him in grade school, but for me, that forever is real!"

"Is it, Yu? Do you believe him?"

"I..." Yu began.

"He'd like to think that," the Shadow said, finishing for him. "But his lifetime of moving still isn't over. His family has made him leave Inaba, the one place he felt truly loved. What if, the next time he visits, that love has waned?"

"That won't happen," said Yukiko. "He'll always have a place at my family's inn."

"Yu, Yu... Let me tell you a story. Some time in the future, you'll come to visit Inaba, and find that no one is waiting for you at the train station. You'll go to your uncle's house, knock on the door, and find that no one's home. You call him up, and it takes several tries before he bothers to answer. He's forgotten that you were coming to visit. When he finally comes home with Nanako, she hides behind his legs, afraid of you. You aren't her big bro anymore—you're a stranger... too much time has passed."

"Nanako-chan won't forget him," Yosuke said levelly.

The Shadow continued. "The next day you go to the Junes food court, where everyone was supposed to meet you, but no one shows up. Fearless leader, everyone's moved on without you. No one has time for you, no one has time to reminisce about the days when you were the hero..."

"That won't happen!" Yosuke shouted.

"Won't it, though? It's happened over and over again... Isn't that right, Yu?"

"No," Yu said hollowly.

"But what if there was a reason for his friends to gather around him once again... A murder, perhaps? Or... two murders?"

"I didn't..."

"You didn't, but I did!" the Shadow shouted triumphantly. "And you're me, so it's just the same!"

"You started the revenge hotline?" Naoto queried. "On Yu-senpai's behalf?"

"Yes! I've been in this Shadow World ever since he first entered that fateful day in April last year, and I've been gathering power ever since. Enough power to affect small things in your world. I created the revenge hotline, and waited for people with dark enough hearts to call... and turned their wishes into death. Some girl jealous of Hamano Michiyo's popularity wished her dead, and someone in Naoki's family blames him for his sister's death... I granted these wishes to give Yu another chance at heroism!"

"No," Yu whispered. He struggled to raise his head. "I didn't want this."

"Didn't you? Don't you want the Investigation Team to stay together... forever?"

"Not at this cost." Yu pushed himself into a kneeling position. "Naoki was my friend."

"Some friendships die so that others may live!" The Shadow held up its arms in a grand gesture. "It's just life!"

Yu shook his head. "You attacked Chie. That I cannot forgive."

"But it united the team as nothing else. Why else is the Detective Prince here?"

"Actually, I'm here because Yu-senpai was on the Midnight Channel," said Naoto. "But I admit it was Chie-senpai who informed me of the matter."

"You wanted to kill Chie, didn't you?" Yosuke accused. "We could have lost her... I'm sorry, partner, but I can't let this go!"

Yosuke suddenly brought out his knives and attacked the Shadow. The clang of metal sounded out as the Shadow blocked with a katana it produced seemingly from the air. Yosuke swore as the Shadow easily threw him back.

A mass of lightning bolts hit the Shadow as it stalked towards Yosuke—Kanji had joined the fray with a Ziodyne—but the attack was completely ineffective. Seeing this, Kanji tried to slam the deck chair into the Shadow, but missed, and the unbalanced attack landed him in the sand.

Yosuke summoned his Persona, Jiraiya, and blades of wind whipped around the Shadow, which countered with its own Ziodyne, knocking Yosuke right off his feet. The Shadow followed up by charging at him while he was down, bringing its katana swinging down. A gunshot interrupted—the bullet ricocheted on the katana, but threw the Shadow off-balance just enough so that it missed Yosuke, burying the katana into the sand next to him.

"T-thanks, Naoto!" Yosuke shouted as he scrambled back to his feet.

"Keep fighting!" she shouted back at him, summoning her Persona. Sukuna-Hikona's bright blue sword of light slashed at the Shadow.

"Be careful!" Teddie spoke into their minds. "It's preparing a darkness attack!"

Within seconds, the Shadow sent a mass of purple-black fog hurtling towards Yukiko, who had been on standby, ready to use her Persona's healing powers when needed.

"Yukiko!"

In a flash, she was down in the sand, unconscious.

Yellow-white light then surrounded the Shadow as Kanji removed its protection against electric attacks. The Shadow ignored him and stepped back to gather energy around itself.

"It's charging up!" said Teddie.

"We can see that, Teddie," Yosuke answered under his breath. He wondered if he should brace himself; the Shadow's next attack was sure to be a strong one. Usually Yu would give him orders, deciding the best plan for him, but his partner was down on the ground, apparently unconscious. After seeing Yu so vulnerable, the decision was made for him. "Jiraiya!" he shouted, and his Persona manifested and slashed viciously at the Shadow.

The Shadow laughed and several large bolts of electricity rained down from the sky, earthing themselves into the three remaining Investigation Team members. Yosuke crumpled to the ground, knocked out by the attack, but Naoto had been defending, and Kanji's Persona thrived on electricity.

"Is that all you got!?" Kanji shouted, feeling revitalized.

"Antagonizing it may not be the best course of action," Naoto murmured. "It's obviously quite strong..."

"Yosuke's down! Oh, Sensei, we need you!" Teddie whined.

On the ground, Yu stirred as if he'd heard his friend's words, but he soon seemed to give up the effort.

The Shadow turned its attention to Kanji, who relished the fight ahead. "Bring it on!" he shouted, and summoned his Persona to bring down Ziodyne once again. The Shadow withstood the attack and came at Kanji with its katana.

While Kanji went toe-to-toe with the Shadow, Naoto resuscitated Yukiko with a revival bead. "Naoto-kun..." the girl murmured, eyes opening. "What...? Oh!"

"Stand up and get ready!" Naoto concentrated to prepare her mind for her next attack.

Yukiko pulled out a fan and attempted to summon her Persona, but the Shadow broke away from its fight with Kanji to use Bufudyne on her, taking her right back out of the battle.

"You bastard!" Kanji shouted. "Get back here! Your fight's with me!" He summoned Take-Mikazuchi, and the colossus-like Persona swept its massive blade along the sand, tripping the Shadow. "Yeah! Gotcha now!" Kanji's Persona followed up with a heavy attack, knocking the Shadow so hard that it ended up back on its feet.

The Shadow swept up a great gust of wind, stirring up sharp sand that cut into Kanji like dozens of small razor blades. The force of the wind picked up until he was knocked over by it. The Shadow then turned to direct its wind attack on Naoto. Seeing the enemy coming, she shouted, "Megidolaon!" Bright starlight tumbled from the sky into the Shadow, collectively pressing a great weight down upon it.

"Nao-chan! You're the only one left!"

"I'm well aware of that..." Naoto's eyes flickered to Yu as she prepared herself for the Shadow, which came running at her with its katana. The sand impeded her movement, making it difficult for her to keep a safe distance from the enemy, and soon it was upon her. It knocked her down with the flat of its blade before she could summon her Persona for support.

She looked up at the Shadow from her place in the sand. It lifted its katana high into the air, preparing to bring it down on her. "Senpai!" she shouted. "You have to accept it!"

"I can't..." Yu whispered, his voice barely audible.

"You have to! What it represents won't change what we feel, Yu-senpai! We'll always be your friends, regardless!"

"I can't...!" he repeated desperately.

Naoto met his eyes; they reflected such unimaginable pain and sorrow that she had to look away. "Please!" she urged, closing her own eyes. The katana would come down at any moment.

"But... it's not my Shadow..."

"You're not my Shadow," Yu repeated, slowly coming to his feet.

The Shadow paused reflectively in its attack and tilted its head towards him. "So, you finally recovered from that beating I handed you."

Yu walked towards his enemy with purpose. He summoned Izanagi, proving that his words had been true. Izanagi created a barrier around Yu, who hefted his katana in preparation to fight the Shadow.

"If I'm not you, then what am I?" the Shadow asked, lifting its katana in parody of Yu's common fighting stance.

With the Shadow distracted, Naoto tried to sneak away and make a dash for Yukiko, intending to resuscitate her. If Yukiko was conscious, her Persona could bring the party back to full power. However, the Shadow noticed her. "Oh, I don't think so!" it said, and in a flash it stood before her, blocking her path. Naoto pulled up short and tensely raised her gun, but despite the katana, the Shadow was not hostile at the moment. Yu moved to her side, his presence a comfort to her, but the Shadow now stood between them and their fallen friends. It leered at them.

Yu slowly began to explain what had happened to him. "When I came here, into the TV World, on my own..."

"SENSEIIIIII!" Teddie wailed into both of their minds. "You aren't supposed to DOOOOO THAT!" Naoto winced at the sudden noise; she'd almost forgotten Teddie was still there.

"I know, Teddie," Yu replied levelly, "but I had to. I couldn't let it target anyone else. But when I came in, this world formed around me. I was a little lost at seeing all these places where I'd used to live. I'd honestly forgotten most of them. When I came to this beach, the Shadow attacked me and overpowered me, but it let me live."

"Only for the moment," the Shadow whispered.

"It hadn't taken on my form then," Yu continued. "It was a huge mass of shadows."

"I'm reminded of the Grand Prix," Naoto commented. "How the Shadows were able to take on our forms."

The Shadow laughed, an inhuman sound that the real Yu was incapable of making. "I am the fusion of Shadows too numerous to count. We were spurred into action by Yu Narukami when he touched the TV in his room some nights ago. We felt the spark of power... and we desired his attention."

"Well, you have it," Yu said bluntly.

"We... did not actually invent the revenge hotline. Some foolish humans started it... and we used it for our own purposes to taunt him into entering the TV World. We Shadows feed on human emotion... and the emotions of Persona users are an exquisite taste... We enjoyed seeing his reaction to this world, seeing his despair, fear, and loneliness. Just as we enjoy the anger you are directing at us right now."

"It ends here," Yu promised.

He swung upwards at the Shadow with his katana, but the Shadow danced back several steps. It smirked at him, and then its body seemed to melt into black ink. The ink ran to the ground and pooled rapidly, growing upwards and coalescing into a giant Shadow that was twice as tall as Yu. The mass blossomed out like a lotus flower, revealing its true form: a blazing sun with eight thick arms radiating out from it. Its head in the center shone too brightly to be looked at directly. Some of the arms held objects, and some were scrambling in the sand as if they wanted to escape the body they were attached to.

One arm swung a baseball bat at Yu, but he dodged it—barely. Another arm immediately came at him with—a stuffed bear? He recognized it as a toy he'd once lost as a child... Distracted somewhat by the symbolism, the arm knocked him back several feet. The sun turned its massive body to face him and shuffled forward, concentrating on keeping him down.

Naoto aimed her gun where she thought the sun might be weak: the joint between an arm and the main body. The attack was unexpectedly effective; it completely severed the arm from the body. The arm fell to the ground, where it broke its shape and reformed into a large Shadow that resembled an oversized crawling baby: a Bambino Shadow. The baby cried and summoned fire around her. She endured the attack, but the smoke made it difficult to breath.

"Teddie, is it immune to light?" Naoto asked when she finished coughing.

"I-I don't know, Nao-chan!" Teddie answered, sounding worried.

Naoto sighed. He was certainly no replacement for Rise-san. She would have to find out the hard way. She summoned her Persona, which formed a square pattern in the sand under the baby. Light emanated from the square's edges, engulfing the Shadow, and when it faded, the baby was no longer there.

"Well done, Nao-chan!" Teddie cheered. "B-but Sensei's in trouble!"

While she had been fighting the baby, the giant sun knocked down Yu. It apparently intended to smother him with its mass. Naoto tried shooting at its main body to get its attention, but it was as if her attacks had no effect. In frustration she shot off another arm, and soon she was facing another Bambino.

"You've got to help Sensei!"

"I know," she told Teddie, trying to remain calm. She couldn't help Yu when this baby was still attacking her. She tried a light skill once again, but this time the baby was lucky and survived.

The baby used a skill that pulsated green light around her. She began to feel nauseous, and time seemed to slow down for her. When the baby attacked by swiping its stubby arms at her, she found she couldn't dodge it in time. In frustration, she tried to shoot it with her gun, but her shot went wide of the mark, missing so completely that the baby didn't have to do anything to avoid it.

"Nao-chan!" Teddie sounded desperate. "I don't think Sensei can breath!"

Naoto dazedly looked towards Yu, but all she could see in that direction was the giant sun Shadow. She could only hope that Yu wasn't losing his fight.

The baby attacked her once again and knocked her down, which allowed it another free hit on her. She then wished Teddie was here in person for his healing abilities, or that she had been able to bring back Yukiko...

Finally her nausea cleared as the baby's debilitating skill wore out. She summoned her Persona once more, this time directing a Mudo skill at the baby, since the Hama had failed. The baby squealed as the purple fog dispatched it, rending its body into nothingness.

Naoto rushed towards the sun, but it didn't seem to be moving, even to attack. She had no way to move it, if indeed Yu was being smothered by it.

In a flash, the sun was lifted into the air—and abruptly tossed aside. Naoto blinked, and then saw Kanji pulling up a wheezing Yu from the ground. Either the Shadow hadn't defeated Kanji earlier, or Yu had found a way to bring him back to consciousness.

"Yu-senpai?" Naoto asked, ensuring he was ready to fight.

Although his face was still flushed from his near-asphyxiation, Yu nodded. "Let's do this."

"You got it, Senpai!" Kanji ran towards the sun and hit it as hard as he could with the deck chair. It fell over, but quickly righted itself with its remaining arms.

"The arms are its weakness," Naoto informed them. "If we can sever the remaining..."

"You two take care of that," said Yu, "and I'll focus on the body. It won't get me again."

In answer, Naoto took aim and shot off another of the sun's arms. She and Kanji worked together to defeat the Bambino it created.

While they took care of the arms one by one, Yu readied a Persona in his mind. He thought of Naoki Konishi, who had died as part of this Shadow's plan for power. After his sister had been murdered last year, Naoki lost what few friends he had. People began to treat him as something to be pitied—or worse, awkwardly avoided. Yu had helped pull him out of the depression he'd been sinking into, bringing back at least a little bit of his enjoyment in life.

And now Naoki's future had been snatched away from him. Yu clenched a store receipt in his fist, the item Naoki had given him as proof of their friendship, and brought forth the Persona Attis, the god of sacrifice. Attis heeded his call—a green-skinned demon wrapped like a mummy.

The giant sun had enjoyed summoning fire at him; that was how it had overpowered him earlier. Now such skills were rendered useless because Attis absorbed fire. The sun tried a different tactic: summoning a wind storm, but the power of Yu's Persona simply reflected the wind back at it. The sun was turned around by the wind, allowing Naoto an easy shot at its last remaining arm.

Unbalanced now, the sun fell backwards into the sand. Yu walked slowly, inexorably towards it with his katana in hand. Although he was not a cruel man, he wanted the Shadow to know he was coming to end it. He watched, unfeeling, as the Shadow struggled and failed to get up again.

"It ends now," Yu said with finality, and stabbed the sun right in the center of its face with his katana. The Shadow emitted a long squeal before melting into nothingness.

Yu stood unmoving over where the sun had been for several long minutes. While he reflected on the victory, Naoto and Kanji brought the rest of the team back to their senses.

Yosuke approached Yu with forced cheerfulness. "Man, partner, I thought my Shadow was bad, but it was nothing compared to yours!"

Naoto exchanged a look with Yu. He nodded, and Naoto explained that it hadn't been Yu's Shadow at all. "It was a Shadow, or, rather, several Shadows who wanted to absorb Yu-senpai's unique powers."

"Huh, so it wasn't your Shadow? Tch, it was strong enough to be," said Kanji.

"Then when Yu-kun was on the Midnight Channel, it was just a trick?" Yukiko asked.

Naoto nodded. "I suppose it wanted to entice us to come in here after Yu. We foiled its plan only by being stronger than it had anticipated."

"Barely," Yosuke muttered, recalling the powerful Ziodyne that had taken him right out of the fight. "Do you think that revenge hotline is over with, now?"

"Possibly..." said Naoto. "The Shadow implied that it was started by humans, and that it had simply borrowed their idea."

"Umm... Do you think another Shadow might do the same thing?" Yukiko asked. "That's really scary... We almost lost Chie..."

In lieu of answering, Naoto looked at Yu, and the others followed suit. Naoto was reminded of something she'd learned when working with the Kirijo Group: to some, Personas were a blessing, and to others, a curse...

"There's so much we don't know about Shadows," said Yu. He looked at Naoto. "Report what happened here to Mitsuru-san. It might help with their research."

"Of course."

"And... about whether it could happen again..." Yu looked troubled.

"Don't blame yourself," said Yosuke. "I can tell you're planning to. The Shadows would be here with or without you, right Teddie?"

"That's right, Sensei! This world is our home," Teddie said via his Persona. "By the way, Sensei, most Shadows are afraid of your amazing power! But some can't help but be attracted to it..."

"Like a moth to a flame?" Yukiko said.

"Like a Teddie to a girl he wants to score with!" Teddie said enthusiastically.

"Please drop it, Teddie," Yukiko replied, sounding tired.

"I'm beat," Kanji said. "Let's worry 'bout this tomorrow."

"All right," said Yu. "We'll meet up at Junes, and then visit Chie."

Yu returned home to find Dojima and Nanako celebrating with a large sushi tray. "It's over already," Dojima said, pointing at him with chopsticks. "We caught the punks that killed Hamano Michiyo."

"You... did?" Yu said.

Dojima peered at his face. "Huh, seems like this time you actually didn't know before you're supposed to. Fancy that. I was expecting you'd be able to tell me all about it. Yeah, these kids from outside of town had set up that 'revenge hotline'—and can you believe they actually took a job asking to kill someone? Sometimes you have to wonder what's wrong with this world." He shook his head to emphasize his disbelief.

"Dad... you forgot to order the sushi without wasabi..." Nanako made a face.

"Oh, I'm sorry... I always forget that, don't I? Here, give it to me." Dojima took the sushi from Nanako's plate and scraped the wasabi off so that she could eat it. "What about you? You can handle wasabi, right?"

Yu recalled a time he'd licked some wasabi left in the refrigerator last year... "I'll manage," he said, joining them at the table and putting some sushi on his plate. "Tell me about the case?"

Dojima explained that they'd found evidence that linked the creators of the revenge hotline to Michiyo's crime scene. In fact, Michiyo's cause of death was a subtle poison as discovered by special analysis in the crime lab. "Still no C.O.D. for Konishi, but we're thinking they did him in, too."

"I see," said Yu, and he asked no more questions.

"Seems they'd had the idea for a revenge hotline from some website that had been doing the same thing a few years ago down in Tatsumi Port Island. Well, I'm just glad it's over. Hey, Nanako, since I'm home, want me to read you a book tonight?"

"Yeah!" Nanako ran to her room to pick out her favorite book.

Dojima smiled after her. Yu was glad to see that the detective had been able to reconnect with his daughter. She needed him, especially after Yu had left Inaba...

While Dojima read to Nanako in another room, Yu ate his sushi without tasting it. Leaving Inaba... That might be what it all meant. Despite what his friends said, it was hard for him not to believe that it was his fault in some way. His special powers causing Shadows to resort to extreme measures... If he hadn't returned to Inaba, would Naoki still be alive?

Yu dreamed of a familiar place... a blue place.

"Welcome to the Velvet Room."

He opened his eyes. Margaret sat daintily in her usual place, the hefty Persona compendium seemingly weightless in her lap. She drew her red lips together in a smile. Her eyes danced at the sight of him, but turned cloudy in response to his expression. "You seem troubled," she noted. "Perhaps I could help?"

"Margaret," he said.

"What happened to you today draws heavily on your past," she said. "Have you thought about it? No... I see that you are focused on the death. I believe you have overlooked something."

Yu tried to think, but it was always difficult to focus in that place, in her presence. "Why did Naoki have to die?" he managed to ask.

"Focused on the death..." she repeated with a sigh. "Your social links will live on. Naoki Konishi is still very much a part of you, as is anyone who has ever called you a friend."

"I'm not worried about the power of the link," he protested.

"Of course. I know you better than that," she said, with a small, tight smile. "Let us try another approach... Recall what happened during Golden Week. Was that your own doing?"

"No. That was Labrys, and—"

"And yet you were involved," she interrupted. "Was it your fault?"

Yu didn't answer.

She smiled again, more kindly this time. "Several paths stretch before you... I trust you'll choose the right one. Think carefully on my words."

The dream faded, and Yu awoke on the futon in his room on the second story of the Dojima residence. It was already past midnight, and it wasn't raining, but he looked at the television in his room anyway.

'We were spurred into action by Yu Narukami when he touched the TV in his room some nights ago,' the Shadow had said while wearing his own face.

It was his fault... wasn't it?

Despite not being his Shadow, the monstrous sun had taken on a form designed to disturb him the most, even carrying a Baby Bear toy and other objects that had been important to him in his youth. The sun itself had looked like a drawing he'd made when he was a kindergartner for his mother to put on the family refrigerator, though he hadn't admitted that to anyone, not even Naoto, whom he could trust to keep a secret.

Naoki... And it had attacked Chie as well...

What could he do? He couldn't get rid of his Personas. Even if he could, would he want to? The power of the wild card was said to be an exceptionally rare gift. Margaret would have something to say about that, let alone her younger sister who desired that same power herself...

The wild card... Like the number zero, empty, and yet filled with infinite possibilities...

I'm feeling empty right now, Yu thought to himself, leaning back in his futon to stare at the ceiling. If he'd only kept his curiosity in check and hadn't touched the TV, if he hadn't checked the Midnight Channel...

If he hadn't come to Inaba...

If this, if that... He couldn't change the past. Was that what Margaret had been trying to tell him?

The paths stretched before him. If he couldn't discard his power, and struggled even to keep it in check... What else was there to do but use it?

The Investigation Team's scheduled meeting was postponed due to Naoki Konishi's funeral. It was a beautiful sunny summer day, completely at odds with Yu's feelings. He wanted the sky to be overcast and threatening rain, to mirror the mourning bursting in his heart.

He was surprised to find Naoto waiting for him at the temple where the funeral would be held. At first, he thought that she had come there to support him, but she reminded him quietly that Naoki had been her classmate at Yasogami High.

In fact, Naoto wasn't the only Investigation Team member present. Kanji was there, along with his mother. It was strange to see him wearing a formal dress suit. He'd even removed his piercings for the occasion. Yu recalled that Kanji had been friends with Naoki in middle school. Yosuke was also present, perhaps in memory of Naoki's sister, who had worked at Junes before she had been killed. Yukiko had come to support Chie, who felt a commonality with Naoki as the Shadow's intended victim.

During the sutra reading, Naoto lightly touched Yu's hand to bring his attention to it; he had been holding the prayer beads so tightly that his hand was turning red. His frustration and helplessness at Naoki's loss seemed magnified during the ceremony.

After the funeral ended, Yu thanked his friends for being there, and then he went home and spent the rest of the day alone in his room.

Yu's friends noticed the melancholy eating away at him. To pull him out of it, they invited him on a trip to the beach. He almost declined, but Yosuke's enthusiasm for the trip made it difficult to refuse. Yosuke also smartly invited Nanako, and Yu couldn't let her go without him.

To Yosuke's—and perhaps Kanji's—disappointment, Naoto had already left Inaba for a case elsewhere, and so the mystery of what she looked like in a swimsuit remained unsolved. Perhaps she had suspected a trip to the beach was in the works, and escaped before she could be roped into coming.

The trip ended up cheering Yu up a bit; it was great to see his friends up to their usual antics. Teddie started a splashing fight with Yukiko and Chie, who teamed up to get back at him, prompting him to call for Yosuke to back him up.

Nanako made a sand castle, and Kanji accidentally tripped over it. In apology, he helped her make an even more elaborate one. Then Teddie declared himself the king of the sand castle, and he tried ordering Yukiko to be his queen.

At least this time, Kanji didn't lose his swimsuit and cause a near-disaster with the girls.

Yu himself didn't spend that much time in the water; he had more fun watching his friends. He also still had a lot on his mind...

That night Yu remembered something Margaret had said... that even old friends were still a part of him.

He scrolled through his contact list on his cell phone. There were so many people there whom he'd lost contact with after moving away from where he'd met them. He'd kept up with the Investigation Team, of course, but there were other people whose numbers he'd recorded before moving away, numbers he'd never once called.

He remembered a conversation he once had with Yosuke, in which Yosuke admitted that he, too, never called any of his old friends from before his family had moved to Inaba. He hadn't wanted to bother anyone by calling. Yu thought hard about it now. He knew that if anyone called him, he would be happy to hear from them. It wouldn't bother him at all.

While thinking, he'd scrolled all the way to the letter 'N' and stopped on a name there. 'Naegi.' That was a surname. What had been that boy's first name? Something ordinary... Yu hadn't put it in the phone.

Putting on a brave face, Yu called the number, and when the boy picked up, he explained who he was and why he was calling. "I saw your number in my phone and wondered how you were doing."

"You remember me?" the boy named Naegi said. "I'm really surprised! I tend to blend in with the crowds..."

Yu smiled to himself. "I remember that hoodie you always wore."

"I still have it!" the boy exclaimed. "In fact, I'm wearing it right now!"

"Do you remember me?" Yu asked. "I moved not too long after we met, but..."

"Let's see..." Naegi seemed to be thinking. "You were a year above me, but we were in soccer club together, right?"

"That's right!"

They spent a lot of time talking; Naegi was especially excited to hear that Yu was friends with a pop idol. After they ended the call, Yu basked in the warmth of his elation at having contacted an old friend. Naegi had been a good kid, but not very good at soccer, if he remembered right. It had been really fun to talk to him.

Empowered by the success of the call, Yu decided it was time to face his future. He scrolled further down into his contact list, seeking the name 'Shirogane.' Of his friends in the Investigation Team, this was a number he didn't often use; usually he relied on Chie to keep Naoto up-to-date.

Even Naoto was aware of it. "Yu-senpai? This is rather unusual," she said when she picked up.

"Naoto..." he said. "Could you get me into contact with Mitsuru Kirijo?"

"Of course," Naoto replied without hesitation. "I have her number here. I can inform her that you plan to call, as well."

"Thanks, but I plan to call her immediately."

A few moments passed before Naoto spoke. "Is something the matter? Well, if there is, I assume it's urgent, so I won't keep you." She proceeded to tell him the number.

"It's nothing," he said. "I just wanted to talk with her about something."

"Very well," said Naoto. "I'm sure she would enjoy hearing from you."

Yu appreciated how Naoto could keep her natural curiosity in check. He'd sensed her interest over the line. He'd have to talk to her again later.

He punched in Mitsuru-san's number. He stared at it on his cell phone's screen for several long moments before finally pressing the call button.

"This is Mitsuru Kirijo," said a mature, confident woman's voice. "May I know who's calling?"

"Hello, Mitsuru-san? This is Yu Narukami." He paused before deciding more information might be required. "We met during Golden Week."

"Bien sûr! I remember." Her friendly tone of voice gave the impression that she was smiling at the other end. "You were the leader of your team. Your determination reminded me of an old friend... What can I do for you, Narukami?"

"I was wondering... Would it be possible for me to join the Shadow Operatives?"

"All right," said Yosuke, peering through the window of the old-fashioned instant camera that was set up on a tripod. "Let's do this!"

His friends on the Investigation Team were crowded together in front of the Inaba overlook's railing. It was the perfect backdrop for a group picture: a clear blue sky, the sun beaming down from high above, a couple of trees at the edges for scenery.

"Ted," he said, motioning his hand above the camera, "move a little closer to Naoto—not that close! I swear—all right, that's good. No, Kanji, you gotta stay in the back. You're too tall! Not that far back, you're out of the picture now. Stopstopstop. Perfect! Now on the count of three..."

He pressed a button on the camera and rushed to join the group, barely managing not to trip over Teddie, who was having trouble staying still long enough for even this one single picture, and stopped next to Yu, who sent him the briefest of amused looks before turning back to the camera.

"One!" Yosuke announced. He winked right as the camera emitted a sound indicating it had taken the picture.

Now that the picture-taking was over, the group spread apart to put more comfortable space between each member. Yosuke noticed Naoto heading for the camera and decided to let her take care of it. She'd been excited about the old thing ever since she saw it, but Dojima-san had firmly told them all that he wanted it back in one working piece. Hearing that, Naoto had reluctantly been forced to put away her screwdriver.

Naoto handed the photograph it had printed out to Rise, who fanned it in the air until the picture showed up. "Wow, Yosuke-senpai!" the idol said, inspecting it. "You got it right the first time. We won't have to take another."

"Why do you sound so surprised?" he protested.

"I was expecting Teddie to get in the way," Kanji admitted. "Hog the picture, y'know?" The bear protested with a 'Hey! So rude!'

"I was expecting Yosuke to put bunny ears on me!" Chie followed up.

"Oh, Yosuke-senpai couldn't do that," Rise remarked, "because his hand isn't free."

Yosuke didn't comment as everyone in the group looked at him and noticed how Yu was holding his left hand. In fact, Yu now hugged the trapped hand to his chest at the sudden attention.

"Oh, Senpai~" Rise put her hands together in front of her and released an over-exaggerated sigh.

"Partners to the end, huh?" Chie teased.

"Oh, I know!" Yukiko announced with excitement. "Take his other hand, Yu-kun! And then we'll take another picture."

"What, while they gaze deeply into each other's eyes?" Chie's grin was diabolical, and Yukiko nodded.

"That's too much, even for me," Yosuke complained, but Yu was definitely trying to grab his other hand to make it happen. "Come on, partner, I'm not letting them have any blackmail!"

Yu let him go with a sigh so overdone that it rivaled Rise's. Yosuke rolled his eyes and rubbed the back of his neck with the hand that was still warm from being held.

Rise took her phone out and took a picture of the photograph with it. She pressed a few buttons on the phone. "There... it's sent! And Senpai gets the hard copy." She handed the photograph to Yu, who looked at it for a moment before tucking it safely away in his day planner.

"I suppose we could take other pictures," Yosuke mused. Dojima-san hadn't said he needed the camera back with any film in it, after all.

"Oh, oh!" Teddie began to dance around. "Me-me-me! I want everyone to have a picture of me! All the pretty ladies, so they'll always have moi with them~"

"...I'd probably burn it," Yukiko said.

Teddie flinched dramatically. "Oh, my heart!"

"Naoto!" Kanji called. "There's a kingfisher on the rail. M-maybe you could take a picture?"

"Ah, that might be a problem," Naoto replied, barely glancing up from what she was doing with the camera. "It will most likely be gone by the time I've reattached the primary lens."

"That answers that," Yosuke said. "No more pictures."

"That's what phones are for, Yosuke-senpai!" Rise declared. "Honestly, I wondered why Dojima-san gave us that old thing to use, anyway."

"It has the instant-gratification thing going for it," Chie pointed out. "Since it prints out the pictures for us."

"It is not an 'old thing,'" Naoto murmured. She had one eye closed while she looked through some opening in the camera. "There are plenty of uses for a camera like this, even today. For one, it provides an aesthetic that newer cameras simply can't."

"Sure, if you like grunge," Rise said. "But you can do a lot of that with photo editing now."

Naoto began to elaborate on her opinion, but then gave up to focus on her work. A few moments later, she put her screwdriver away and handed the camera to Yu. "There," she said. "Your uncle complained about a problem with the flash button not responding. I was able to fix it."

Before Yu could reply, Rise was calling for his attention. "Senpai~ Is everything set for tomorrow?"

Yu paused for a second, looking down at the camera in his hands, then nodded at her.

"Speaking of tomorrow, partner," Yosuke said, "you probably ought to get home. We've got a lot of cooking ahead of us."

"'We'?" Rise asked. "You're going to help Senpai?"

"Well, yeah," Yosuke replied. "Cooking for all of us is a big order. Maybe I can't help with the actual cooking, but at least I can be moral support."

"More like a distraction," Chie commented. "I can see it now. They're still in the kitchen past midnight because they're too busy kissing instead of cooking."

"Which is why we should be going now," Yosuke said, knowing full well that his face was burning up despite all the self-control he was exerting on it not to. He picked up the tripod and looked at Yu, who nodded. After a round of goodbyes, they headed on their way.

"Are you all right?" Yosuke asked Yu during the walk back to the Dojima Residence. It was just the two of them on the empty street. "You've been quiet all day. Well, quieter than normal, that is. About as quiet as you used to be when you first came here."

As if to prove that, Yu didn't answer the question at all. Yosuke glanced sidelong at him, and then wished he wasn't carrying the bulky tripod, because his boyfriend definitely looked like he needed some hand-holding right now.

"Partner?" Yosuke prompted.

Yu lifted his head, not quite meeting Yosuke's eyes. "Y-yeah, I just..." he began, his voice hoarse from lack of use. He cleared his throat before continuing. "I just didn't have any words to say."

"...You're thinking too hard. I can tell."

Yu looked away, apparently out of words again.

They walked in silence for a minute or two. Yosuke noticed it was starting to get dark out. Already? Their group photo hadn't taken that long. He was supposed to have a whole afternoon left to spend with Yu.

Well, on the bright side, he still had the entire night with him. One more sleepover. What number was it now? He had kind of lost count.

"Wh-when..." Yu began, breaking the unnatural quiet.

Yosuke glanced at him as he slowed in his steps. "Yeah?"

Yu cleared his throat again, not that it helped very much because his voice was always a bit dry. "When do you work next, Yosuke?"

"Oh, don't worry about that," Yosuke answered, freeing a hand from the tripod for a moment to wave at him. "I got this whole first week of spring break off. I'm totally free. We could hang out every day, if you want."

"Of course I want, silly," Yu said, meeting his eyes now with the soft expression that made Yosuke always want to use the bathroom. "But you really took that much time off just for me?"

"Of course I did," Yosuke countered, although his brow furrowed a bit while he thought about it. He hadn't actually taken the time off for Yu. He'd put in the time off request a long time ago. So long ago, it was before they were dating. But looking back, maybe even back then he'd wanted to spend that time with Yu.

"That's..." Yu said slowly. "Well, umm... Thank you."

Yosuke blinked at him. His cheeks were all pink, and... Why was he so flustered about something so simple? It wasn't like him. "Geez, you can be such a dork sometimes..."

"But, umm... Do you think..." Yu went on, ignoring his comment. "Do you think you could help me pack on Monday?"

"A-ah..." Yosuke stalled, almost tripping in mid-step. Anything that reminded him of, well... the end... It was something he didn't want to think about.

At the same time, he'd jump on any opportunity to spend more time with his best friend before that end.

"Sure," he answered, hoping he actually sounded sure.

"Then it's a date!" Yu announced, and it was so hammy that Yosuke had to chuckle and shake his head. He'd probably said it like that just to cheer him up.

Though it wasn't as if tonight wasn't a date of its own. Well, as much of a date as the two boys could have with a seven-year-old present.

"Big bro, big bro! And Yosuke-nii!" Nanako exclaimed, running to the door when the two entered the Dojima Residence. She hugged Yu's legs, and after Yosuke set the tripod against the wall, she hugged him in turn, too.

"How was your last day of school, Nanako-chan?" Yosuke asked politely.

The little girl beamed up at him. "My homeroom teacher gave everyone a goodbye letter, and after school I went with Miwa-chan and we played with jump ropes. And then Takeyoshi-kun came by and Miwa-chan tripped."

"Uh, is she okay?"

"Yep!"

"Well, that's good—what's the matter, partner?"

After setting the camera down on the kitchen table, Yu had opened his day planner. Now he was frowning down at the photograph they'd taken earlier in the day. "We... we should've taken the picture with Nanako..."

Nanako tugged on his shirt until he brought the picture down to her height so she could see it. "Oh, it's big bro and big bro's friends."

Yosuke picked up the camera and held it up to his face. "We'll take a picture of you two right now, how's that? Let's see... Let's have you sit behind the kotatsu together. That'll be cute."

Nanako tugged on Yu's hand, and together they went to the kotatsu and posed for the picture. The little girl hugged her older cousin's arm, smiling so hard that her eyes were shut. Yu smiled, too, mostly at her enthusiasm. When the picture came out of the camera, Yosuke handed it to Nanako, and she aired it out with obvious delight.

"Yay, I'm gonna hang it on the wall!" she declared, running to her room.

While she was away, Yu asked Yosuke to come sit by him and take another picture. "Set it on a timer and..."

"Actually, it's out of film," Yosuke said. "It really is! There's a little light right here, see." He turned the camera's backside towards his partner as proof. "We'll take a picture with our phones later, okay? We gotta get that sushi made soon, or else we really will be in the kitchen 'til midnight."

"Check the fridge," Yu murmured. He was tracing patterns on the kotatsu's tabletop. Upon closer inspection, Yosuke recognized that they were hearts. He rolled his eyes, an action totally unnoticed by his preoccupied partner, and went to the kitchen and opened the fridge.

Inside he found several packs of already-made sushi. It was enough to feed the Investigation Team and then some. "Wha... when did you...?"

"I made it all last night," his friend admitted. "I had some free time and extra Inaba trout on hand, so..."

Yosuke hid his disappointment. He'd wanted to watch Yu work in the kitchen one last time. At the same time, though, he didn't really want to be around the guy when he was preparing fish, so he wasn't going to complain.

"We can still do what Chie suggested." Yu's voice came from right behind him. Yosuke jumped, slamming the refrigerator door shut in the process. He hadn't heard his friend move!

And before he knew it, Yu was kissing him softly on the lips. Yosuke kissed back, his eyes closing halfway. Today there wasn't a flavor to the other boy's lips, no, actually there was a slightly metallic tang, he'd been chewing on his lower lip too much recently, and Yosuke knew why, it was the same reason he'd been so quiet earlier today...

Which reminded Yosuke of something that had been on his mind for a while now. Something that he'd been wanting to say before... before it was too late and his partner was miles away. They were alone now, and holding each other, and it was the perfect opportunity, so... He stopped kissing to look into his boyfriend's eyes. "Say, Yu, umm, I..."

There was a giggle from behind him. He pulled a few inches away from the other boy instinctively in embarrassment. Nanako was watching them from the hallway, her eyes dancing with delight at having caught them in a precious moment.

"N-Nanako-chan," he stuttered.

"It's okay," she said. "I think you're really cute!"

"Thank you, Nanako," Yu said, pulling Yosuke back into a hug. It didn't embarrass him to be affectionate in front of her. Probably he just liked seeing Yosuke's face change colors.

They had takeout for dinner because Yosuke wouldn't let Yu cook after learning how he'd spent all that time making the sushi platters on his own. He made Yu choose what they were going to order because he'd always wanted to take Yu out to a restaurant on an actual date. With one thing or another, it had never happened; this would have to be good enough for now.

The rest of the evening was spent playing board games with Nanako until it was her bedtime. After Yu tucked the girl into bed and told her goodnight and that he loved her, he and Yosuke relocated to his room to watch a movie together.

Yosuke put a DVD that he'd brought from home into the player. It was an action movie, the first in a series that he really liked. He was hoping to share the love with his partner.

He sat down next to Yu on the couch. Within just a few seconds, the other boy was cuddling up next to him, his nose nuzzling against his neck. "Isn't this nice, Yosuke?"

"You're so gay," Yosuke told him. And then he clamped his hand over his mouth, because holy cow, that was definitely not what he'd wanted to say.

"Yeah, I am," Yu replied without any shame, not pausing a single moment in rubbing against his neck. "You just now noticed?"

Yosuke let out a small chuckle. "S-so much for that sliding scale, huh?"

"I did say that some people are firmly on either end," Yu murmured. "Does it bother you?"

"If it did, I wouldn't be letting you do that," Yosuke pointed out, wriggling a little because it was starting to tickle. And then Yu started kissing his neck instead and that made him squirm even more...

It didn't bother him, and they were once again alone. He could... he could tell Yu now, tell him what he'd tried to say earlier.

But as Yu began to lightly nibble his skin, he decided it really wasn't the best time. "Ah, p-partner, d-don't we have a movie to watch?" he whimpered.

"I, ah, I'm not all that interested in the movie," Yu murmured, his breath warm against Yosuke's neck.

"I-it's my favorite," he protested further. "Come on, we have all night. It's not that long, really."

The gray-haired boy pulled away with a sigh. He reached over to the work table to grab the remote and soon enough the movie was playing. He snuggled up next to Yosuke again and found his hand to hold, but kept his eyes on the TV screen instead of doing anything more, well, personal. Even so, it wasn't long before he was resting his head on Yosuke's shoulder.

Yosuke didn't pay much attention to the movie, despite it being his favorite. He hadn't seen it in a long time, actually, and now that he thought about it, it wasn't 'his movie' anymore. He'd changed over the last year—heck, just over the last three months—and maybe he thought about things differently now. The hero wasn't all that heroic, unlike Yu or any of his IT friends, really, and the love interest, despite her beauty, was kind of annoying and unhelpful. She wouldn't have been on their team, that was for sure.

So he spent the movie focused on the boy next to him, trying to commit everything he could to memory. The warmth of his skin, the softness of his breath, the careful pressure he applied when toying with his fingers...

And before Yosuke knew it, the credits were rolling. What, it was over already? He didn't remember the movie being quite that short, but he glanced at the time on the DVD player and it was definitely late enough.

He wondered what Yu had thought of the movie. Come to think of it, the guy hadn't said much during it. Usually he'd ask some questions, or laugh sometimes at the jokes, but...

He tried to free the hand Yu was holding and it came away without resistance. He frowned, then turned his head just enough to look at his partner and... seriously?

Yu had fallen asleep. During an action movie.

Yosuke sighed in vague frustration. He was doomed never to spend a real night with his partner. There was so much he'd wanted to do, and so much more to say and talk about...

Well, I can at least do this, he thought with another sigh. He took out his phone and snapped a picture of the two of them together.

The next day was already here. Yosuke hardly remembered waking up or getting changed, but here he was, carrying a cooler full of drinks and following Yu to the flood plain, where all their friends were gathered at the picnic table.

It wasn't going to be their last get-together. There were still a couple of days left, after all. But it was the last time they'd experience Yu's cooking, which was why everyone had accepted his offer to feed them all, despite everyone thinking that they should be treating him instead.

And today Yu had recovered his voice, or at least enough of it to warn them that it was his first time making sushi. "But I guarantee that the fish is local and fresh," he said. "I caught it myself."

"You can fish, too, Senpai?" said Kanji. "You're a man of many talents."

"I wouldn't say I'm talented at it," Yu protested. "It mostly requires patience. But I like it. It's relaxing."

"Y-yeah, that's why I like knitting," Kanji admitted. "Plus when you're done, you get something that someone can use. I s'pose that's how you fed all those cats."

"I also like skinny dipping," Yu went on.

Yosuke spat out his soda, fortunately only onto his own plate of sushi. "Wha... Nobody asked that, partner!"

"I think about that when I'm fishing," Yu explained, as if it was a perfectly normal segue from the topic. "How easy it would be to strip off and jump in the water and have a swim. Especially when it's hot out."

"W-wow, Senpai," Rise said weakly. "Guess we should've volunteered whenever you asked if anyone wanted to go fishing with you."

"I didn't know that it was a euphemism either," Chie said. She shook her head and patted Yukiko's back to help her calm down her giggles.

"There may be decency laws against that," Naoto said. "I suggest you check first. Dojima-san may know for sure."

"I've only gone swimming twice this whole year," Yu said with a sigh.

"And it was Kanji who had the wardrobe malfunction," Yosuke remarked. "Wait, why are we talking about this!?"

"It's way more interesting than the story about how Senpai caught the Guardian," Rise pointed out. "Uh, no offense, Senpai!"

"Which Guardian?" Yu asked. "River or Sea?"

"There was more than one? Uh, just pass the wasabi, will you? Thanks." Rise applied a liberal amount of wasabi to every piece of sushi on her plate. After she ate a piece, she gushed on about how good it was.

But Yu's mind was apparently focused on swimming. "We'll have to go to the beach again sometime."

"Oh!" Rise exclaimed, a wasabi-caked piece of sushi halfway to her mouth. "We should make plans for Golden Week! You are coming back for Golden Week, right Senpai?"

"I'll try my best," Yu promised.

Rise popped the sushi into her mouth and pushed aside her plate to pull out a school planner and opened it to the appropriate page. "Well, Senpai, you'll probably get here either Wednesday night or Thursday morning," she reported, "so our plans should begin then. Maybe we'll go out to lunch. Or we could have another picnic! Oh, but Senpai shouldn't have to cook again. Maybe we could—"

"The food's on me," Yosuke interrupted quickly.

"But we know you can't cook!" Chie said, glaring at him.

"Give him a chance," Yu said. "I think he'll surprise you."

Chie's eyes went wide. "Have you been giving him lessons?"

"Nnnnn," Yosuke began, then bit his tongue. He wasn't sure how much he'd lie to get out of Mystery Food X: Round 2. He settled on saying, "You'll see." Truthfully, he'd probably just order Aiya for everyone. Chie couldn't very well complain about that.

"Okay, so, picnic if it's not raining, food courtesy of Yosuke-senpai." Rise wrote it down on the planner. "If it is raining... Movies instead?"

"N-no, not the movies," said Yosuke. "We're all gonna wanna catch up with Yu. Can't do that in a place we can't talk."

"Oh, I thought you'd like that, Yosuke-senpai! The theater is dark, and you can have a lot of fun in the dark~" Rise teased.

Yosuke pointedly ignored both her and the way Yu began to teasingly stroke his hand under the table.

Naoto spoke up. "I believe Dojima-san wouldn't mind if we brought the picnic indoors if needed."

"You mean just having it at his place?" Yosuke mused. "It would probably work."

They spent some time coming up with further ideas and discarding the more ridiculous ones. The girls collectively decided against the beach—that was what summer was for—and a trip to the Amagi Inn's hot springs was also out of the question because it would be busy with customers over the holiday. They decided to have one day focus on simply walking around the town. It didn't sound fun when written on paper, but it was what Yu liked best: being able to see people, and then it could include people outside the team.

When the schedule was filled out, Rise took a picture of it with her phone's camera and emailed it to everyone. "There! Now everyone knows the plan."

"Sounds good to me," Yosuke commented, not looking up from the plate of sushi he was slowly working on. His partner really was the best. None of his pieces had any fish or tofu.

Yukiko began to laugh. Instead of trying to calm her down, Chie began to laugh with her. "Y-Yosuke," Chie gasped. "Did you even look at the schedule?"

"Not really, I mean, Golden Week is so far away, plans are gonna change..." He frowned down at the paper that Rise now slid towards him. She was grinning so wickedly that her nose was wrinkled.

On the schedule, Rise had marked off 10pm to 10am with 'Yu-senpai & Yosuke-senpai private time~~~ Don't ask~~~.' Several hearts were drawn around it.

Yosuke gave the laughing girls a flat stare and told them it wasn't funny, but that only made them laugh harder. He opened his mouth to complain, but Yu kissed him, and that made him stammer. "N-not in front of everyone!" he squeaked. "Besides, I'm not even..."

Yu tilted his head. "Not even...?"

"Err," said Yosuke, lowering his gaze to his plate of half-eaten sushi. "S-sorry, I spoke without thinking again."

"You're not going to get away with that, Yosuke!" Chie said. "We all heard you. 'Not even' what?"

Yosuke emitted a resigned sigh. "It's just that..." he began miserably.

"What's wrong, Yosuke-senpai?" Rise asked.

"I'm not even happy with that schedule. It's not a good time. That time you marked off."

"It's not?" Rise gave him the most skeptical look she could manage. "It's night time!"

"Exactly," he said. "Yu, he... he always falls asleep."

Rise blinked at him for a moment, and then laughed. "I didn't know you were that boring in bed, Yosuke-senpai!"

"It-It's not like that!" Yosuke retorted. "Dammit, I knew I shouldn't have said anything..."

"That is too much information," Chie remarked. "Although we did kind of ask for it."

"I'm... I'm sorry..." Yu murmured. "I didn't know it was a problem. You could have told me. I would've made an effort to stay awake for you."

Yosuke shook his head. "I figure if you fall asleep, it's because you need the rest. I don't... I don't really mind it, but..." He looked at Rise. "Just two hours earlier on one of the days. Is that possible?"

"Yosuke-senpai," Rise began, then paused, a thoughtful look on her face, like she was possibly going to probe for more information. Then she smiled. "Of course."

"Oh... really?"

"You're right. This isn't set in stone. Who knows what'll happen when Golden Week finally rolls around? I'm going on my comeback tour soon, so I might not even be able to come."

"What, really?" Yosuke said, leaning his head back in surprise.

"Yes, really. Which is why... I'm so glad Senpai made this sushi for us! It was my request, did you know that? And it's sooo goood." Rise ate another eye-wateringly wasabi-laden piece.

Yosuke moved a piece of sushi around on his plate with his chopsticks. Rise was leaving Inaba. And so was Yu, and... Their whole group really wasn't going to be the same, was it? "H-hey, Naoto. Are you going to stay in Inaba? Now that the school year's over..."

The detective canted her head to the side. "Unless a case comes up that requires my urgent attention, I plan to continue my education here."

His shoulders slumped a little in relief. He wasn't particularly close to Naoto or anything... but at least most of the team would still be together. Not that he and Yukiko and Chie would have all that much free time to hang out as a group outside of studying, if their teachers were to be believed about the third year workload.

Now he began to worry about whether or not he'd be in the same homeroom as the two girls when the next term started. What would he do if he didn't have Chie to poke him awake when he drifted off? What would Yukiko do if Chie wasn't there to calm her down when she started laughing at something. Though admittedly, without Chie, she might not laugh much at all.

There were only three homeroom classes, which wasn't too many compared to the city. So the chance that they'd be together was...

He was in the middle of trying to do some mental math to figure it out when Yu interrupted. "Umm, can you finish your sushi?"

Yosuke blinked and noticed that Rise, Chie, and Yukiko were no longer at the table. Huh... when had they left? Kanji was away, too, but Yosuke soon spotted him by the river, playing a ball game with Teddie. Most of the table had been cleared off—only Yosuke's plate was left.

"Oh... I think I'm not hungry anymore, partner," he said.

Yu gave him a sympathetic look, then reached over and took away his plate.

How could it be Tuesday already? Yosuke stared at the date listed on his phone's screen. March 20th? It couldn't be.

But it was. Yu's last full day in Inaba.

What the hell had happened to Monday? He had some vague memories of taping up boxes, and his closet at home was now overstuffed with Yu's old Yasogami uniforms. Cookies had been involved at some point, too, because Teddie had been gushing this morning about Sensei's skill at cooking them.

And that was all he knew.

How did that much time pass, and so fast? And he hadn't said anything, he hadn't said what he wanted to say to Yu and now...

Now he just had to wait for said boy to get done saying goodbye to everyone in town. Yosuke sighed to himself and looked up at the clear sky above. He was sitting at a table in the Junes food court, losing ever more time.

Yu had promised him there'd be alone time later. Yosuke didn't have any more chances. Was it even worth saying now? He'd look desperate and maybe it was too soon in their relationship or maybe it was too late...

Augh.

To distract himself from his growing anxiety, he began to look through the pictures he'd accumulated on his phone. He didn't have as many pictures of Yu as he'd thought.

Here was a picture he'd taken of Yu standing next to the big TV at Junes, the one they used to enter the TV World. He'd tried to get Yu to pose in front of it with a golf club, but he'd refused for some reason. Yu had ended up standing there with his hand resting on the TV's upper frame, like he was patting it for being good. What amused Yosuke the most about the picture was how careful his friend was not to touch the TV's screen.

Ah, in this one Yu was taking on the Aiya Rainy Day Mega Beef Bowl Challenge. Chie was forcing beef-laden chopsticks into his mouth. Despite the sickly look on his face in the picture, he'd had actually won that day. More power to him!

Here was a cute one of Teddie cuddling up next to Yu in his floor futon at the ski lodge. Silly bear loved his Sensei, huh?

The next one was a group picture he'd taken after they'd saved Marie. The strange girl was clinging to Yu like, well, like she liked him. It was Rise all over again, wasn't it? Haha...

Oh, here was Yu on Valentine's Day, all wrapped up in blankets under the kotatsu. The poor guy had gotten sick with a cold that was probably induced from the time they'd been trapped in that cabin in that blizzard on the ski trip, and then worsened by the following day spent running through Marie's dungeon. Because of that cold, Yu had skipped school and missed out on all his chocolates. As a result, Yosuke hadn't been able to make use of Nanako-chan's 'hot tip' that Yu didn't like chocolate. It was quite a shame, but it wasn't like Yosuke'd really wanted to get him anything for Valentine's anyway. He wasn't a girl!

Ah, he didn't want to think about that right now, so he flipped to the next picture.

Which was his favorite picture, though he'd never admit it to anyone. It was just a picture of Yu sleeping peacefully in his futon. He was cute when he was asleep, okay...?

He stared at that picture, time trickling past him.

"Yosukeeeeeeee!" cried an all-too-familiar voice. He looked up to see Teddie in his costume heading towards him. "Can I have a soda?"

"Teddie," he said with a sigh. "Yeah, sure."

He did even better than a soda: he bought Teddie a Topsicle, too.

"You're so generous today!" the bear remarked. He moved into Yosuke's personal space and whispered too-loudly, "What happened to the real Yosuke?"

"It's all me, Ted," Yosuke said with another sigh, running his nails through his floppy hair. "And there's no catch. Just work hard, okay?"

"I always work hard!" Teddie claimed. "At least for the ladies." He quieted for a moment, and his big eyes blinked at Yosuke. "Yosuke? Is Sensei really leaving?"

"Ted..."

"Where's he going, Yosuke? They say he lives somewhere else, but... isn't Nana-chan's house his real home?"

"...I don't actually know where he lives now," Yosuke admitted.

The costume's eyes widened. "He's your honeybear and you don't know where he lives?"

"H-honeybear!? Ted, where the heck did you come up with that?"

"Papa-mura called Mama-mura that one night when she cooked his favorite meal," Teddie reported. "And then she kissed him!"

Yosuke sighed. Too much information! He could've lived without knowing that about his parents.

Honeybear? A spark of memory came to him, a memory of his childhood. His mother was the mama bear, and his dad was the papa bear, and he was the baby bear. Wow, what had happened to those nicknames his family used to use for each other? Well, they were kind of embarrassing...

But huh, maybe it was fitting that he was the one taking care of Teddie.

"Look," he said, trying to get back on topic, "even Yu doesn't know where he is going—huh?" His phone began to ring. The boy in question was calling him. "Hang on, Ted. What's up, partner?"

"Yosuke, umm..."

"Sensei!!!"

"Yeah, I'm here," Yosuke said. "So's Ted—calm down you crazy bear!" He expertly kept the phone away from the team mascot. "Partner, are you still there?"

There was a pause that made him think the call got dropped, but then he heard Yu very quietly say, "Yosuke? Something just came up."

Bad news... His throat began to tighten. It's okay, he told himself. Maybe it just means we'll have to meet up later than planned. That's no big deal. "Wh-what is it, partner?"

His partner's voice remained almost inaudible. "Can you gather everyone at the food court? See, I received a letter this morning..."

Yosuke didn't sleep at all that night. It wasn't from the horror of what they'd had to fight, although indeed that thing had been horrifying—he'd shut away those memories for the moment. No, what had priority right now wasn't horror but a cocktail of anger, frustration, and sadness. Because of that damned final battle, he'd never gotten that alone time with Yu. He'd never been able to say it.

Now time was up.

Here he was, up bright and early at the train station with the others. None of them had been able to sleep much, he noticed with a cursory glance. Naoto was continuously rubbing her eyes, not from tears but from tiredness, and she had a rather large coffee with her. Rise, on the other hand, was already dabbing her eyes with a tissue. Kanji seemed as stoic as ever, and Chie and Yukiko were standing quietly together, Teddie somehow allowed between them.

Yu himself wasn't even there yet, and as they waited for him to show up, Yosuke wondered for a hopeful moment what would happen if he missed the train, but it didn't take long before Dojima's car arrived and he stepped out of it with Nanako. Of course he wouldn't miss the train, that had been a stupid thought.

"Hey," Yu greeted, setting his duffel bag on the ground for a moment.

Silence followed. No one knew what to say.

Then Dojima broke it with an awkward chuckle. "Well, I know everyone's going to miss you, Yu. You've still got a few minutes. Why don't you say your goodbyes?"

A few minutes? Yosuke sighed. That was hardly enough time, and with everyone gathered, there was no privacy.

An elbow nudged him. He looked and found Chie smiling sadly at him. Although she didn't know the details of his turmoil, she could guess what he was feeling. He met her eyes for a moment and then looked away.

Yu cleared his throat, drawing everyone's attention, but when he opened his mouth to speak, nothing came out. He tried again, but the problem persisted. Yosuke almost stepped in to cover for him, but eventually he breathed a simple, "Th-thank you. Everyone."

Now Chie set her hands on her hips. "Silly! You don't have to thank us for anything!"

Yu's overly-tense posture relaxed as everyone chimed in, saying what needed to be said and taking the pressure away from him.

"She's right, Yu-kun," Yukiko followed. "Without you, I might not be here."

"Damn right, Senpai," Kanji agreed. "You saved all our asses. You're the man!"

"Indeed," said Naoto with a nod. "We should be thanking you, senpai. It was your resolve that saw us through to the end."

"P-please don't," Yu managed. "I only did what was right."

"Yeah, but you trusted us, and you led us, even when things got rough," Yosuke added, finding his own voice. "Not everyone would've done that. You're, umm, amazing, y'know."

"Aww, is Yosuke-senpai blushing?" Rise teased.

"He's as red as a cherry Topsicle!" Teddie declared.

"I am not!"

"Oh, Sensei's face is red too!" the bear observed. "Is it catching?"

"S-sorry," Yu murmured. "I'm just... really happy that I met all of you. I know I'll think of you all every day."

"Goes both ways, Senpai," Kanji said. He wiped his nose with the back of his hand.

The station blared a boarding announcement. A-already? Yosuke bit his lip hard and mentally cursed Dojima-san for buying such an early train ticket.

"Ah, that's... that's my sign to go," Yu murmured. He picked up his duffel bag and turned towards the train, but hesitated before going on. "Umm..."

Teddie suddenly tackled him in a hug from behind. With an exasperated sigh, Yosuke tried to pull him off, but then Nanako was there, and then Rise was there, and it turned into a big group hug. Dojima had to be the one to break it up. He pushed Yu onto the train and restrained Nanako from trying to join him there, and moments later the train's door closed.

Yu looked through the window from the other side of the door, his eyes shining with unshed tears. He lifted a hand to wave at them as the train began to chug away.

And the reality dawned on Yosuke in that very moment.

Yu was leaving.

"N-no," Yosuke whimpered.

He walked after the train, his walk turning into a jog and then outright running to keep up as it picked up speed.

Partner, no...

His friends were running with him and shouting their own words of affection and reassurance. He hardly noticed them.

It was his last chance, wasn't it? His last chance to tell him...!

With the train nearly out of sight, his feet at the very edge of the platform, the words finally escaped from his throat.

"Partner—! I love you!"

He barely manage to keep to his feet and not fall over the edge. Tears streamed down from his eyes, blurring his vision. "I love you," he whispered to the wind.

Whether Yu had heard him or not... Well, it didn't matter.

He would tell him in person the next time they met.

[Final Author's Notes: And as the train goes off into the distance, this song starts to play. Or maybe not. My best friend pointed out that it's a great SouYo song, hehe. This story's title came from it.

So, yeah! It was a long time coming, but here it is, the end of this little SouYo series!

It has been a very interesting experience. Honestly, I didn't have any interest in the boy's love genre at all until I started reading Persona 4 fanfiction on AO3. The first SouYo I read was scatter's "There's No Need to Go It Alone," and at the time, I was weirded out by it. Souji loves Yosuke... what...? It kinda racked my mind, haha, but then I was curious and looked for more, so from there I read scatter's other works, Chocchi's "Close Calls," and Chisotahn's "Ten Steps," and several others until I came to the realization that I really loved these two dorks. (I recommend all of those for anyone looking for more, hehe)

Then I ran out of stuff to read, so I wanted to try my hand at writing it myself, and that's where "Like Amazake" came from. When writing stories, I tend to get focused on the how and why. I was trying to answer how the two would even get together and figured that it made sense to be after the game's main events. Why not a holiday like New Years? The game even had a relevant cutscene for it!

It was just going to be a one-shot, but my friend encouraged me to continue, so I wrote more and more, hehe. As I kept going, I decided that there are already plenty of stories exploring the homophobia aspect, so in the later installments of the series I tried to focus more on him realizing how important his partner is to him instead of worrying about 'the gay.' I hope it worked, haha.

Anyway! I think this is where I want to end the series. Anything more I write for these two will probably be, uhh, one-shots of the M or E rated variety, heh heh. It was hard enough to keep the series G-rated to the end! Really, I've been into this pairing for over a year now. I can hardly believe it!

Thank you, thank you, for reading!]

Summary: The Investigation Team finally goes on that ski trip. Yu tries to make memories with everyone. He ends up getting lost in a sudden blizzard with Yosuke...
Author's notes: This is a crosspost from AO3 and ffnet.
Spoilers through February (Golden). This is, obviously, based on the ski trip event in the game (note: the game, not the anime). I tried to work it so that it's not exactly the same, but there are a few lines that are borrowed from it.
See this page for the series index.

"I-I'm not sure I can do this, S-Senpai!" Rise cried from the top of the bunny slope. She wore a pink winter jacket, and its matching pink ski glasses were resting on her head.

Yu, dressed in somber black with a white scarf, was waiting for her at the bottom of the slope. "Would you like me to show you again?" he called back.

Before she could answer, he was already sidestepping his way up the slope until he was at her side.

"Copy my stance," he said. He moved his legs until his skis were parallel. The top of the slope was relatively flat, so there was no fear of either of them starting to go down unprepared. "You'll push off... and if you need to slow down, you know what to do."

"Y-yeah," she said. "In like this." She tilted her skis inward until their tips were almost touching.

"Now, I want you to—" A sudden whoosh barely a few feet nearby interrupted him. It was a blur in white with black hair—Yukiko, followed shortly by Teddie.

Seeing the two go by so quickly dispirited Rise. "I'll never get this right," she said, voice quavering.

"It's all right," Yu assured her with what he hoped was a disarming smile. "I wouldn't be able to race Teddie, either. And if you don't want to do this, we can return to the lodge. I don't mind."

Rise shook her head. "No, Senpai! I'll learn how to ski and make you proud! Watch!" She settled her ski glasses over her eyes and hunched into a stance like she was going to push off. She trembled, and then... straightened again. "U-umm, Senpai... Could you go first?"

Yu smiled to himself. He didn't mind her hesitation; at least Rise had actually made it to the top of the slope. Kanji and Naoto were still at the bottom.

Besides, this ski trip might be one of the last fun things he was able to do with all of his friends—he was leaving next month, after all. He made it his goal to try and spend time with everyone.

He pushed down the bunny slope, skiing as slowly as he possibly could without stalling so that Rise could observe that it wasn't scary. Once he reached the bottom, he didn't climb back up, instead opting to check up on Kanji and Naoto who were around a dozen feet away.

"Thought Rise knew how to ski," Kanji commented some hours later.

Yu, Teddie, and Kanji were in the lodge's public bath. It was definitely what they needed after a long day out in the cold. The water was hot, and so was the steam rising from it, clearing their sinuses perhaps more than a hot soup could.

Yu was disappointed that Yosuke hadn't joined them, but his boyfriend was still out there challenging Chie at snowboarding. Well, Yosuke would probably be too embarrassed to go into the public bath with Yu anyway. This wasn't like the Amagi Inn's hot springs; towels weren't allowed in the water.

It was a good chance to hang out with Teddie, at any rate, since the bear had been racing Yukiko pretty much the entire day. And Kanji, too; although the younger boy was much more comfortable with himself than he used to be, Yu felt it was his duty to ensure that he didn't regress.

"She learned a few years ago," Yu explained, "apparently when she was much shorter. Now that she's grown up, it's frightening. Any luck with Naoto?"

"Tch," said Kanji. He didn't elaborate.

"Nao-chan fell on top of him and he almost scored!" said Teddie with an excited grin.

"Don't pull that scoring shit with me! Nothing like that happened at all!" Kanji growled, splashing water in his indignation.

It only made Teddie giggle further and start splashing everywhere until Yu calmed him down.

"Sensei! I know for a fact that you're scoring!" the bear declared.

"I cannot confirm or deny that," Yu said with a sly smile that was as much as proof to the bear, but strangely he didn't follow up on it.

Instead, Teddie lifted his feet up and played with his toes in the water for a moment before asking, "What's it like to score, anyway, Sensei?"

"No one's ever going to answer that, Teddie!" Kanji said, shaking his head.

"I'll tell you, Teddie..." Yu began, ignoring the choking sounds Kanji made. "Scoring is like..."

That evening, the entire Investigation Team gathered together in the lodge's lounge to enjoy hot drinks, eat snacks, and tell each other ghost stories. Spirits were high, even if there weren't any actual spirits to be had, unlike, perhaps, that night they'd played the King's Game...

Yosuke stood at the head of the table in front of the fireplace and led the discussion. Yu watched him quietly, and maybe his expression was a little moony. It felt like he hadn't seen Yosuke all day... He contented himself with the fact that they had still had another day here to enjoy. He'd have his chance. Besides, he still hadn't spent time with Yukiko or Chie, either, so he'd have to do that, too.

He blinked himself back to awareness and realized with some shame that he hadn't even heard the last ghost story...

"I'm not sure I wanna sleep in this old lodge tonight," Kanji said with a gulp.

"Nonsense," said Naoto. "This lodge has a high reputation. There is nothing to be afraid of."

"S-still," said Chie, "there's something about a house that eats people... Where did you come up with that story, Yukiko?"

"The Amagi Inn wasn't always the Amagi Inn," Yukiko began. "Centuries ago it was—"

"Oh no, don't tell another one!" Chie protested.

"Who's next, anyway?" Yosuke asked. "Chie, I think you're up."

"Uh, all right," the short-haired girl in green said. "One time there was this ancient medallion that was split into two parts, and..."

It soon became clear that instead of a ghost story, she was recounting the plot of one of her favorite kung fu movies.

While the group focused on teasing her about it, Yu took the opportunity to switch drinks with Yosuke. Mm, Yosuke was drinking hot cocoa and there were still a few marshmallows floating in it. They bobbed up against Yu's lips when he drank it.

"Just because a ghost is a minor character doesn't mean it's a ghost story!" Yosuke sounded disgusted. He sighed. "All right, partner. Can you salvage this?"

Yu swirled the cup and watched the marshmallows whirl around at the surface of the cocoa while he gathered his thoughts. "There was a boy who went to sleep and woke up in a very blue room. Sitting across the table from him was a man with a nose so long the boy could almost reach out and touch it..."

Yu further described the mysterious Velvet Room, and though Yosuke complained that there wasn't any plot to his story, his other friends seemed interested.

"And the girl knew nothing of why she was there. She didn't even know her own name, just the name the long-nosed man gave her." Yu paused thoughtfully. "And she still has amnesia to this very day."

He stopped talking and all of his friends were looking at him expectantly. Then Yosuke broke the silence. "That's it? That's the story?"

"I don't know how it ends," Yu admitted.

As a group, everyone groaned. "You can't just end like that!" "That poor girl..." "What was with that nose?"

"S-sorry," Yu said with a helpless shrug.

"I think that's enough for tonight," Yosuke said, "unless Naoto has something to say."

"I have nothing to recount," the young detective replied. "Ghost stories are clearly in the realm of the illogical."

"Thought so. I figured you'd tell a story about how someone thought something was a ghost and it turned out to be that the cat they'd thought went missing was hiding in the attic."

"Oh, I should have used that!" Chie exclaimed. "That sounds like a good one."

"Really? I just made it up right now..." Yosuke said. He picked up the cup in front of him and took a drink and spilled it over his hands when it didn't contain what he expected. "How did my cocoa turn into tea!?"

Yu began to chuckle.

"The greatest ghost story of them all," Rise teased. "Senpai!"

"Partner, that wasn't funny," Yosuke said. "If it was still hot, I could've burned myself!" He wiped his hand with a napkin from the table.

Yu apologized, and Yosuke was mollified. Yosuke did, however, take his cocoa back from Yu's unresisting hands and finished it off himself.

"Yosuke's right, we should call it a night," Chie said. "I've had enough stories—"

"Teddie's turn!" The bear suddenly jumped up from his seat. "Once there was a beautiful lady—"

"I think I'll cut you off there, Ted," said Yosuke. "No one wants to hear you make up a story about how you scored. Especially when you don't know what it means."

"I do too know what it's like to score!" Teddie proclaimed, his chest puffing out. "Sensei told me!"

"Partner, you didn't!" Yosuke covered his face in his hands.

"Oh?" said Rise, leaning forward across the table. "This I have to hear."

"There's no way," Chie whispered, her hand over her mouth.

Yu smiled enigmatically. "You can tell them, Teddie. They already know."

"Scoring is like eating a Topsicle!"

Yosuke groaned. "Really...?"

"That can be taken in so many ways, Senpai," Rise said, raising her thin eyebrows.

"There's more," said Yu. "Go on, Teddie."

Teddie bounced up and down with excitement. "And then finding out it's your favorite flavor!"

"What the hell..." said Yosuke. "That doesn't even make sense, partner!"

Rise and Yukiko were laughing together, and Chie looked like she couldn't decide between joining them or being mortified. Naoto's face was carefully blank, and Kanji was frowning.

"Topsicles are good," Kanji admitted. "But I dunno if I'd go that far..."

"It was clearly a joke at Teddie's expense," Naoto said. "However, it is as good an explanation as any until Teddie matures."

"If he matures," Yosuke muttered. "That's a big 'if.'"

"My favorite flavor is lime!" Teddie declared as if that mattered at all.

"Note to self: never give Ted a lime Topsicle." Yosuke shook his head. "Sometimes I wonder about you, partner... Anyway, it's getting late. If we wanna hit the slopes early tomorrow, we ought to get some shut eye."

Yosuke made to stand, but Yu grabbed his arm and pulled him onto the couch. "Stay back," Yu requested in a whisper so that only he could hear, "until the others leave."

The girls retired together as a group, and Kanji escorted Teddie away to the room while unsuccessfully trying to explain that Topsicles were not part of the process at all.

Alone now, Yu kissed Yosuke on the cheek. "Come on, partner!" Yosuke protested. "You know Teddie'll be back any minute for more snacks!"

"I've been wanting to kiss you all night," Yu whispered, his voice husky. "All day, even! That's why I switched our drinks..."

"I'm sorry to tell you, partner, but I don't think we're going to get any alone time on this trip. Kanji and Teddie are staying in the same room. And you know if we take too long to get there, they'll be wondering what we're doing!"

Yu almost told him to let them wonder, but he'd already done enough to ruin Teddie's innocence today. They really didn't need to be caught by the bear in any sort of intimate moment.

"I'm not happy about it either," Yosuke confessed, a tinge of pink to his cheeks. When Yu continued to look disappointed, Yosuke gave in and kissed him on the mouth. "That'll have to do for now, okay?"

Yu sighed and released him. "All right. Let's get some sleep."

Their room was similar in style to the one they'd had at the Amagi Inn after the Culture Festival. There were four floor futons lined up next to each other, and there was a TV in the corner and a small tea table which held their now-cold drinks. They'd already settled their sleeping arrangements earlier. To maintain their reputation, Yu and Yosuke were on opposite ends of the room. Teddie was next to Yu, and Kanji was at the bear's other side, between him and Yosuke.

Despite not being next to Yosuke, Yu was content with the arrangement. It proved that Yosuke had grown up a lot, since he was completely okay with sleeping next to Kanji now. It made Yu very proud...

And fortunately, unlike the Amagi Inn trip, Yosuke didn't make any incredibly stupid plans to try and raid the girls' room. Nope, Yosuke didn't have any girls on his mind anymore, Yu thought to himself with a smile as he drifted off to a dreamless sleep. Just his partner, hopefully...

They were outside the lodge the next morning. A riot nearly broke out when Naoto innocently commented that the point of the ski trip was to spend time with Yu since he was leaving Inaba next month. Spending time with everyone had been Yu's plan, but it relied on his friends being unaware of it!

"You're right...!" Kanji said, eyes bulging. "I want to make memories with Senpai, too!"

As the others murmured their agreement and began to crowd around him, Yu gripped his ski poles more tightly and quietly began to panic. Were they going to make him choose between them all?

Where was his day planner when he needed it!?

"Why don't we let Senpai decide for himself?" Rise said. "Be honest!"

He wasn't able to stop his eyes from widening, like a deer facing an eighteen-wheeler. Or surrounded by a wolf pack...

"Wait a sec, that's not fair," Yosuke spoke up. "You should all go together, you know?"

Naoto agreed, and Rise followed suit by adding, "Well, he probably would have chosen you anyway, Yosuke-senpai."

"No, actually," Yosuke protested. "I'm snowboarding. Skiing is for chumps! Right, Chie?"

"Uh, yeah!" Chie answered. She turned her snowboard around. "What, you wanna rematch, Yosuke?"

"You're on!"

Yu heaved a small sigh of relief at his best friend's timely intervention. In the end, he spent most of the day with Rise, Kanji, and Naoto again, much like the previous day. Both of the girls finally braved the bunny slope, and the two boys enjoyed seeing them tackle it again and again, though they never became confident enough to move up to an intermediate slope. Still, it felt like progress had been made...

Yu looked up at the sky from the lower valley. It was getting late. This would have to be his last run. He'd just gone down the mountain with Yukiko and Teddie. Before that he'd gone with Chie. He'd spent some time with everyone... except his boyfriend. He tried to find the boy with his silly camouflage pants and the red jacket that spelled 'Jiraiya' incorrectly and soon spotted him by the lodge, arguing with Chie over who was faster on the slopes.

"I won fair and square!" Chie shouted. "You said best three out of five! And I won three!"

"That last run doesn't count!" Yosuke claimed, crossing his arms.

"It does too!"

"Ted ran into me! How is that fair? You bribed him with Topsicles, didn't you? I see how it is!"

"You make me so angry sometimes!" Chie growled. "But if we don't count that run, then we're tied! I'm not in the mood for another rematch!"

"Why don't I stand in for you?" Yu suggested, stepping perpendicular to them to join the conversation. "I'll go down the mountain with Yosuke, and if I win, Chie wins, and Yosuke, if you win, then you win."

"Partner..." Yosuke said. "I don't think that's fair. You're on skis. They're faster."

"Oh..." said Yu, looking sad. "But I don't know how to snowboard."

"You know, it doesn't really matter that much," Chie said, eyeing the two boys thoughtfully. "All I want right now is some hot cocoa!" She went inside the lodge and they felt a small burst of heat from inside when she opened the door.

"Can we go down the slopes one last time together?" Yu asked.

"Yeah. I'm sorry I didn't do anything with you until now," Yosuke said, scratching his head through the hood of his jacket. "I knew everyone wanted to hang out with you. As long as you had fun, that's all that matters."

Yu assured him that he did. He was pretty sure he'd managed once again to please everyone. "And now it's your turn."

"Saved the best for last, huh?" Yosuke chuckled.

While they rode the ski lift together, Yosuke told him about how he totally won fair and square over Chie in their little snowboarding competition. Yu didn't comment, just smiled in that non-confrontational, 'of course you're right' way of his.

And then they were at the top of the slope. From here, Yu could see all the way across the valley below. The lodge was just a small dot at the bottom of the mountain. He'd already taken in the view before, but this would be his last time up here, so it was worth doing again.

Especially since Yosuke was with him.

"It's beautiful, isn't it?" Yu commented. Snow blanketed the mountain like a field of white. Leafless trees with spidery, icicle-laden branches poked out on either side of the main route down, which was marked out by bright orange flags.

"Definitely won't see this in the city," Yosuke agreed. "So... Did you make any memories?"

Yu nodded. "I think so."

"Remember this," Yosuke said. "I'm gonna beat you down the mountain!" In an instant, he kicked off his snowboard and went careening down the slope.

"But skis are faster—" Yu stopped and sighed because he was protesting to air. He put on his ski goggles and then set out to prove it.

It didn't take very long for him to overtake Yosuke; the boy hadn't had much of a lead, anyway, and you couldn't fight physics. Still, Yosuke sometimes cut corners instead of following the established path when it curved, so at times they seemed somewhat even. Yu would keep it to himself later, but he slowed down a bit just for his friend to keep up.

Yu pulled up short in the valley, the angle suddenly not steep enough to continue skiing. He frowned and looked around, because the lodge was nowhere in sight. They'd definitely gone down main route which would lead them there at the end. He was certain he hadn't missed any of the path flags...

Yosuke stopped a few feet away from him and kicked up his board. "Well, that's that. Chie wins." He sounded happy, anyway—probably still pumped up on adrenaline from the snowboarding. "It's getting dark out, though. Man, will you look at those clouds? Hey, which way's the lodge?"

"I... don't... know..." Yu admitted slowly.

"Uh, partner? I was following you."

"Yeah, you were following me," Yu replied with a smirk. He was allowed to crow a little bit, right?

Yosuke shot him an annoyed look before worry overcame him. "Seriously, where's the lodge?"

Yu didn't know. He looked at his right hand, and then his left hand. The right hand had less snow, so he went in that direction after taking off his skis and shouldering them.

There was a sort of a path between a growth of trees, and they made some progress along it when the storm hit them. The sudden blizzard blew flurries of snow right into their faces. The wind was chilly and blasted through their jackets as if they weren't even wearing them. Soon it was hard to see through the sheer torrent of snow coming down.

Somehow, the storm felt familiar to Yu, though he couldn't answer why even to save his life. He'd never been in a blizzard before, as far as he could remember...

"Y-Yu...? Are you there?"

He could hardly hear Yosuke over the howl of the wind. He glanced back and saw his friend trudging forward. Yu probably only appeared as an unidentifiable shape to him, maybe even a tree. He probably should have worn a brighter color instead of black. He grabbed Yosuke's gloved hand and pulled the boy along with him.

"A-are we th-there yet?" Yosuke asked. He tried to laugh but it sounded miserable more than anything.

"We'll find it," Yu promised him.

"Y-you'll like it if I t-turn into a T-topsicle, right?"

"You're being silly," Yu told him sternly.

They continued in silence for a moment and then Yosuke said, "I can't f-feel my legs."

Yu couldn't feel the cold anymore, and that was probably a bad sign. He didn't know what to do, and he hated that. He tugged Yosuke's arm and told him they couldn't stop moving. Yosuke said he might be about to collapse, and Yu knew he didn't have the strength to carry him if he did.

Fortunately, he didn't have to try. He spied a cabin not too far away. Upon seeing it, Yosuke seemed to regain some energy, and they shuffled towards it together.

No one answered their knock, and when Yosuke tried the door, they found it wasn't locked. They entered without hesitation and closed the door firmly shut behind them. They dropped their skis and snowboard right there at the threshold without any ceremony.

"This place is old," Yosuke said after their eyes had adjusted to the darkness. "It doesn't have electricity."

It seemed to be an abandoned cabin. The air smelled musty and the view out of the window was blocked by dust on the inside and frost on the outside. The snow shovels leaning against the wall were gathering cobwebs. A bunch of cardboard boxes were stacked in one corner and an old lantern lacking fuel hung near them.

It was definitely warmer here than outside due to the absence of wind, but it was still very cold. Yu wasn't sure how safe it would be to fall asleep here, though his exhaustion from their long trek through the snow begged him to try.

"Hey, there's a hearth!" Yosuke discovered. "Maybe we can light a fire!"

They scrounged around the cabin and found some wood and matches and were able to get a very small fire going in the cabin's firepit. There wasn't much wood and it took half the matches just to get it going...

Yu took off his scarf and jacket and laid them as close to the fire as he could to get them to dry out. He had Yosuke do the same, and then they gathered at the fire and held their hands out to it to warm them.

"Fire is a lot hotter in my memory," Yosuke muttered. "This isn't going to last very long, is it?"

Yu, staring at the dancing flames as they crackled and burned, didn't answer.

"This place feels like it's been abandoned... Do you think the others will get a search party out for us? What if we're stuck here until the storm ends? How long do blizzards last, anyway...?" Yosuke trailed off, maybe because Yu had nothing to say.

The fire began to dim along with their spirits.

"We're going to die here, aren't we?" Yosuke whispered.

Yu jerked his head back to reality and blinked at his friend. He realized by the quavering quality in his voice and the way his body was trembling that Yosuke was about to cry.

"We're going to die," Yosuke repeated, "and it's my fault because I wanted to go on a stupid ski trip with you. And now we're gonna d-die together. Dammit... I don't want to die!"

"Yosuke!"

Yosuke bowed his head and sniffled. The tears running down his face reflected the last bit of firelight.

Yu scooted behind his friend and wrapped his arms around him to try to soothe him. "We're not going to die."

Yosuke's body relaxed a little in his embrace. "We defeated that giant eyeball, but our biggest challenge yet is h-hypothermia... Dammit..." He sniffled again and rubbed his raw nose. "Imagine the headlines when they find us. Two Boys Found Frozen In Each Other's Arms."

"It won't come to that," Yu assured him. "Someone will notice we're missing and send help."

"...What if they think we're messing around, and that's why we're missing? They won't send help, then."

"Why? Because they're afraid of catching us?" Yu pressed his hands into Yosuke's belly and was mildly annoyed at how their many layers of clothing limited his ability to be affectionate.

"Well, I don't want to die a vir—what am I saying?"

"I don't think we should take off our clothes," Yu murmured, but he kept his chin on Yosuke's shoulder so that his breath would heat the boy's neck.

They watched the fire together for a few minutes, Yu's close presence keeping Yosuke calm.

"Hey, Yu...?" Yosuke's head leaned back to try and look at him.

"Yeah?"

"I wanted to tell you..." He paused and turned his head away. "Thanks. For giving me a chance."

Yu didn't answer with words, just made a positive sound against Yosuke's neck.

"Even if it has to end like this." Yosuke sighed.

"We're not going to die," Yu told him again. "When the fire goes out, we'll move to the corner of the room, huddle together, and use our jackets as a blanket, all right?"

"Y-yeah..." Yosuke's voice was shaky again, so Yu kissed his neck softly before pulling away. "Y-Yu?" he whimpered.

"Stay here," Yu told him as he stood up. "Stay by the fire." They hadn't finished exploring the tiny cabin, and he wanted to do it before the weak light from the fire was gone. "I'm going to clear a corner, okay?"

Yu moved a chair and wondered if he could break it apart for firewood, but it turned out to be made of metal. As he pushed a heavy cardboard box out of the way, he considered that he could break the box down and then burn it. Unfortunately, it was full of mechanical equipment. He wouldn't have enough time to take everything out before the fire went out—

The fire went out.

"Yu...!"

"Bring the jackets and come over here," Yu directed softly.

Yosuke obediently brought them over once his eyes adjusted to the lack of light. Yu sat down in the corner and patted the spot next to him, and Yosuke joined him. Yu took the scarf from him and tied it around both of their necks, and Yosuke draped the jackets over them. They were still a little warm from the fire.

Yu shifted his body so that his arm was around Yosuke's back. The boy followed his lead and leaned into him. It reminded Yu of the time they'd sat together just like this on the floodplains...

"Yosuke," Yu said quietly. "You didn't have to thank me. I know what I want."

"Right now I just want to be warm," Yosuke muttered. He resettled the jacket and drew his legs in closer under it.

"I want you to know that I have no regrets," Yu went on.

"Regrets?" Yosuke protested. "I thought you said we weren't going to die..."

"Hear me out," Yu said. "We saved Yukiko, and Kanji, and Rise, and Naoto. We caught the killer. We saved Nanako-chan. These are things no one else could do."

"Yeah... We brought peace to our sleepy little town..."

"And you were by my side the whole time," he whispered right into Yosuke's ear. "Every step of the way."

Yosuke turned his head away. "S-so was Chie!"

"Yes, so was Chie," Yu agreed. He took his hand out from under the warm jacket just to turn Yosuke's head back to face him. "But I never wanted to kiss Chie. So... when the two of us became more than friends... I was really, really happy." His eyes were half-closed as he watched Yosuke, and he squeezed the boy's side. "I'm still really, really happy..."

Yosuke dropped his gaze. He found Yu's gloved hand under the jacket and held it. "Y-you know, you make me feel like the luckiest guy in the world. I'm not going to lie. It's been... it's been weird, having a boyfriend. I guess it'd be the same if I had a girlfriend, but... I can't understand it, sometimes. When you're not with me, I wonder what you're doing, I wonder if you're thinking about me, if you're wishing I was there..." He paused. "Ugh, this sounds so lame..."

"It's not lame..." Yu whispered. "Keep going..."

"I don't know what else to say. Except... that I want to be with you more, and... that I'm glad I'm not alone right now."

"Me too." Yu squeezed his hand. "We'll make every day count, okay?"

Yosuke nodded, and when Yu moved in for a kiss, he didn't resist at all. He did, however, complain that it was too cold for this when Yu pulled away. "Isn't my nose like ice? Yours sure is..."

"Want me to kiss that, too?" Yu teased.

"No, just my lips again," he replied. The boy eagerly obliged, and they spent some time comforting each other in that manner.

Then a light flashed on, interrupting the moment. Yu frowned at the shadows that were now cast on the wall behind them.

"A rescue team!?" Yosuke exclaimed.

As their eyes adjusted, they realized the light came from a television that was standing in another corner of the cabin. "I thought there was no electricity," Yu murmured.

"I wonder why it turned on. Let's check it out." Yosuke carefully draped his jacket over the front of his body so that he could carry it with him and then stood up.

Yu joined him and together they stared at the rather old-fashioned television. It had a rabbit-ears style antenna and the channel changer was a knob on the front.

"You don't suppose..." Yosuke began and trailed off.

"The TV World has never been very cold," Yu remarked.

"We don't know where it would take us. Could be a Shadow's den..."

"And we don't have our weapons, but..."

"It's worth the risk," Yosuke finished. "Agreed?" Yu nodded, and Yosuke reached out to touch the screen. As he made contact, suddenly a feminine hand shot out of it, grabbed his arm, and pulled him the rest of the way in. He didn't even have a chance to scream.

Yu blinked at where his vanished friend had been a second ago and followed in after without hesitation.

They were in a forest. The ground was blanketed with a light dusting of snow, but a weak sun was shining and the temperature wasn't too cold. It was warmer than the cabin had been.

"Wha... Where are we, partner? Whoa, what the hell is that!?"

Yu glanced at Yosuke, who was face-to-face with a large, featureless haniwa. In fact, there were several more of the terracotta statues around them, almost as many as the trees.

Yosuke rapped his fingers against the statue, and the sound echoed since it was hollow. "Man, for a moment I thought it was a Shadow!"

"I did not wish to interrupt, but..." said a voice behind them. Yosuke jumped and grabbed Yu's arm.

Yu himself stared and opened his mouth at the elegant woman walking towards them. "M-Margaret?"

"We have business to attend to," the Velvet Room attendant finished, a small smile that could actually be a smirk on her face. She wore the same clothes as always—blue coat and black stockings—and the cold didn't seem to be affecting her at all.

"She's beautiful... Uh, who is she?" Yosuke whispered. "You know her?"

Yu nodded. "She looks dangerous, but she's an ally."

The mature woman raised an eyebrow in amusement. "Indeed. My name is Margaret, and I am a helper on his journey. I am here to guide you... Do you remember?" She addressed the question at Yu.

"You found Marie?" Yu stepped forward in his enthusiasm, breaking away from Yosuke's grip.

Margaret turned to the entrance to the shrine near them and proceeded to explain that Marie had recovered her memories of who she was... and that she now desired to be forgotten.

"Are we talking about the same Marie... Marie-chan?" Yosuke asked. "I knew she wasn't a student, but... she's from this world? That's hard to take in."

"We'll save her," Yu announced.

"Oh, there's no doubt about that, partner!" Yosuke winked at him. "But, uh... just the two of us...?"

Margaret smiled more with her eyes than anything. "In fact, the others have just arrived. One moment."

She stepped before the old TV standing in the middle of the snow. She pushed her hand through its screen, and when she drew back, the rest of the Investigation Team suddenly tumbled through it in a clash of limbs and mixture of cries, protests, and curses.

"Wh-where are we—you two!" Chie cried. She was the first to get to her feet. "We were so worried! Whoa, I think she's the one who grabbed me...!"

Margaret turned to Yu. "I'll leave you to explain to the rest..."

"Y-yeah," said Yu. "Do you all remember that story I told you last night...? It seems the girl just recovered her memories and she needs our help."

"That story was real? Senpai..." Rise murmured.

"Marie needs us," Yu continued, his face a mask of determination. "Let's make a plan..."

That Marie didn't want to be found was worrisome, but truth be told, Yu looked forward to leading the rescue mission. It would give him one more opportunity to make memories with his friends.

"Yosukeeeeee! Is Sensei in love?"

Yosuke spluttered and dropped the can of The Natural in his hand. "W-wha... Teddie? Oh, don't tell me the girls told you about that..."

Teddie's overlarge eyes were shining, as they tended to do when he was excited—which was pretty much always. "Sensei's heart, stolen by a pretty princess! He draws hearts all day, so it must be True Love! ...Does this mean he gets to score?"

"Ugh..." said Yosuke. He wiped up the soda spill from the top of his desk with an old T-shirt. That L-word was something he wouldn't touch with a ten-foot long Suspicious Pole.

"But who's the lucky lady?" Teddie continued innocently. "Do you know? Rise-chan thinks it's Emmy-chan."

"Yeah..." Yosuke said absently. He sat back in his desk chair and rubbed his face. This was going to be troublesome, but hell, anything involving Teddie was.

"You know!? It is Emmy-chan!?" Teddie sprang forward, getting in Yosuke's face.

Yosuke pushed him back to hold him away at arm's length, but Teddie's opposing force ended up pushing him and his desk chair back until he hit the wall. "What? No, it's not Marie-chan. We haven't even seen her since December."

Shit. Teddie wasn't stupid. He'd just admitted he knew.

"Tell meeeee," Teddie squealed.

He sighed and tried his best to explain. "Yu doesn't want anyone to know, all right? It's really hard for him as it is. That's why I can't tell. Even you." It wasn't exactly true. It was Yosuke who wanted to keep their relationship a secret so badly...

He could see that Teddie was thinking hard about this by the way the corners of his eyes crinkled. Yosuke wondered what stunning conclusion the bear would come to.

Teddie lifted his head. "Okay. Can I have a Topsicle now?"

Yosuke scowled. "It's winter! Why do you want one now?"

"Because the man doesn't sell them in winter even though I asked him SO nicely!" Teddie crossed his arms and pouted.

Yosuke promised to buy a box of Topsicles from Junes's frozen foods section the next time he worked. It was the least he could do, since it had changed the topic and all...

"So, uh," Chie said. "Do you really know who Yu-kun's crushing on?"

Yosuke groaned. "Not you too..."

They were eating lunch together at the school's rooftop. Yu was lunching elsewhere with Yukiko. Chie had some beef-flavored instant ramen and Yosuke had a cheap bento box he'd purchased from a vending machine.

"Well, Teddie said you knew!" Chie proclaimed. "And you can't fault a girl for being curious!"

"I can and will. When the hell did Teddie tell you? We only talked about it last night."

"He has a phone," Chie reminded him.

"I should never have gotten him one," Yosuke declared with a sigh.

"Well... Do you know?" Chie asked again.

"Chie, even if I did, would I tell you?"

"Yes?"

Yosuke deflated. "Just... think about it. If Yu has a girlfriend, and he hasn't told anyone, it means he doesn't want anyone to know, right? And why would he want that?"

Chie's brow furrowed. "I don't know..."

"Just think about it. Use that brain of yours! Yu is super popular, right? And the girl he picks... She's going to be targeted by lots of jealous girls wishing she were the one. It wouldn't be pretty."

"Oh, I didn't think about that," Chie admitted. "So Yu's keeping it a secret to protect her."

"Exactly."

They sat in companionable silence for a few long moments.

"Still... I won't tell anyone, so who is it, Yosuke?"

Yosuke smacked his face with his palm.

"Yosuke-senpai~~~"

Yosuke nearly jumped. It was after class, and he was at his shoe locker, getting ready to leave and go to work, when that angelic voice floated towards him. "Oh, Rise-san. What's up?" He shifted nervously. Even though Rise was on the Investigation Team, they'd never really interacted much. Her talking to him like this was highly unusual.

Rise bounded cheerfully towards him, the coppery curls of her pigtails bouncing and catching the light. "Hey~~ Are you heading out? Let's walk together."

One of the several boys following Rise—part of her mobile fan club—gave him a nasty look, but he ignored it. "Well, I'm heading to Junes, but you can come along, yeah."

Yosuke watched her closely while they walked out the school gates. He'd been a fan of Risette since he'd first heard her music what felt like ages ago, but Rise herself... well, he was uncomfortable around her, mainly because of her massive crush on Yu. She'd latched onto him like, like... like Teddie to a Topsicle, or something... Damn, he'd have to buy some Topsicles today, he'd promised...

"So, Yosuke-senpai..." she began when they reached a quiet street. "A little birdie told me you know who Senpai's girlfriend is." She smiled at him, so perky and bubbly and... fake...

"Oh..."

He should have known there was no way that Rise had wanted to walk with him because she simply wanted to walk with him. Of course there was an ulterior motive at work.

"You don't have to tell me who," Rise went on, "but maybe tell me about her?"

"I've never met her," Yosuke said. He walked a little bit faster now, not exactly to get away from the conversation, but...

Rise easily matched his pace. "Surely Senpai told you something...?"

He thought about it. Maybe he could mess with her, just a little. "She's a fan of yours," he told her. "Of Risette."

"Oh..." Rise seemed troubled by that, but then she cheered up. "She has good taste, then! That's good, right?"

Yosuke felt it keenly—Rise was really upset about this, the idea that Yu had a girlfriend. He almost felt bad for her...

...almost.

"Yeah, sorry," he said. "I really don't know much more about it than you do. He's pretty good at hiding stuff... I never did find the goods in his room." Wait, Rise didn't need to know about that! "Err, like, Dojima-san never knew about the TV World the whole time, you know? It was hard enough to keep it from my own parents, and they aren't cops." Explaining to his mom his sudden urge to do his own laundry—so that she'd never see his torn and bloodstained clothes—had been really weird, that was for sure.

Rise had a finger on her chin; she was thinking. "I suppose... but why would Senpai hide something like that from us? Is he worried that we won't like her? I just can't imagine... that after all we've been through, it isn't... one of us."

He'd never thought about that before. That Yu could choose to date someone 'normal'—or at least, someone without a Persona, someone who knew nothing of the TV World—and it didn't seem right at all. He could agree with her on that.

"Don't worry," he told her. "I-I mean," he hastily amended, "Yu wouldn't choose just anyone. That's a guarantee!"

Her eyes narrowed, and then widened. "Thanks, Yosuke-senpai. But I have to know. I'll find out who it is, just you wait!"

When he reached Junes, Yosuke was feeling more than a little worried...

The next day he was craving a steak skewer because Chie mentioned them in class, so he joined the short line at Souzai Daigaku after school to get one. He was on his own; he hadn't wanted to invite Chie because she'd probably make him pay somehow, and Yu was at basketball practice or band practice, Yosuke forgot which one but whatever, the point was Yu wasn't available today and he was hungry.

"Yo, senpai."

Yosuke turned slightly to see a tall and muscular form sauntering up to him in the line. "Oh, hey Kanji," he greeted.

"You busy?"

Yosuke shrugged his shoulders, which was kind of hard to do with his arms crossed. "Not really... What's up?"

Kanji didn't mince words. "Wanna talk to you 'bout somethin'."

Yosuke stepped forward in line as the next customer was served. "Yeah, okay. Let me get some food first, all right?"

"A'ight." Kanji sat down at the table near the stall and waited for him. When he finished ordering and received his food, Yosuke sat across from him.

Yosuke bit off a piece of the skewer and asked Kanji what he wanted with his mouth full.

Kanji's naturally hard expression softened somewhat. "Rise was sayin'... Yu-senpai's got a girl. I was wonderin'..."

Yosuke swallowed the steak in his mouth and waved the skewer around. "Dude, I don't know who it is, if anyone, why won't you guys stop asking, geez!"

Kanji's steely gaze didn't waver. "I was wonderin' if I should, maybe, knit something that he could give her."

Yosuke bit his tongue.

"Somethin' cute, like a flower or a kitten," Kanji went on. "Girls dig cute things, you know?"

"Y-yeah," Yosuke managed. "That's, uh, really really nice of you, Kanji, but I don't think it'll be necessary."

"Oh... really?" Kanji sounded kind of disappointed.

"You taught Yu to knit, right? Because he already made something. He showed it to me. It was, umm, a bunny..."

"Oh," said Kanji. "Oh! Sweet! I gotta ask him to show me. Eh, if he hasn't already given it to the girl."

"Uhh, yeah..."

After Kanji left, Yosuke brought out his cell phone frantically texted Yu to tell him not to show Kanji the little bunny Yosuke doll he'd knitted.

Yosuke was having lunch alone today, or that was the plan, anyway—Yu was tied up with Naoki Konishi, and Yosuke didn't begrudge poor Naoki that at all.

However, he heard the telltale clang of the stairwell door opening, and sighed when he saw a slight figure in a blue cap step out onto the roof.

"All right, Naoto," Yosuke said when she approached. "Who roped you into this? Was it Rise?"

The detective had the decency to stiffen at his accusation—he was obviously on the mark. "I'm sure I have no idea what you mean. I only wished to have lunch with... you..."

The puzzled look present on Naoto's face by the time she reached the end of her statement made Yosuke laugh out loud. They both knew how unlikely it was that she'd go out of the way to seek him, of all people, out for lunch. "Yeah, whatever," he said. "Have a seat."

They ate in relative silence, the only noise the clattering of their chopsticks as they both ate from their commercially-packaged bento boxes. Naoto was a very prim eater, he noticed, wielding said chopsticks with skill and dexterity. Her posture was uninviting, her shoulders hunched stiffly against the cool winter breeze, and she obviously did not want to be here, but was enduring it anyway. He guessed it was for Rise. From what Yosuke knew of her, Naoto usually spent lunch by a computer in the library, doing research on whatever case she was working on.

"Aren't you going to ask?" Yosuke said when they'd both mostly finished their food.

Naoto sighed. "I suppose I must." She rested her chin in the palm of her hand, fingers tucked under her chin, and turned those silver-gray eyes on him with disguised curiosity. Under that direct gaze, Yosuke found himself squirming despite knowing it was a huge tell. If anyone could put it all together, it would be Naoto. He had to be really careful here...

Maybe he could just deny that he knew and keep his mouth shut. Yeah, that sounded good. "I really don't know anything," he declared.

"I can believe that." Naoto chuckled.

"Okay, that was just mean, Naoto." He couldn't think of a comeback, either... "You know what I meant."

"Perhaps you could elaborate...?" She waved her hand to indicate he should go on.

Yosuke sighed. "Look, if Yu likes someone... I know we all care about him, we all gotta make sure it's a good match for him... But I think... We're already up in his business, right? Maybe this is something we should just let happen."

Naoto was watching him thoughtfully. It was kind of unnerving... He thought of saying more, but wasn't that a way detectives got information? By having their victims fill in awkward silences...

"I see," Naoto said finally. She smiled at him, confident and unguarded. "I understand completely. In this, we must think of Yu's happiness. I'll pursue this no longer—thank you for speaking with me, Yosuke-senpai."

"Oh, uhh, thanks for being the first to let it go." He rubbed the back of his neck sheepishly.

Naoto nodded. "I'll tell Rise-san, but I have my doubts that she will accept my decision. Please be prepared."

"Yeah... You know, you can be really cool when you want to, Naoto. I mean it!"

She seemed embarrassed by the compliment. "W-well, be that as it may be, I should be going..."

Yosuke watched her go, feeling much better than he did before they'd spoken.

Yosuke should have known it would come down to this: a no-holds-barred interrogation.

Rise had forced Yu to come to the Junes Food Court with her and Chie, and Chie had towed Yosuke along as well. The four of them were seated at the long square Junes table, the one with bench seating; Yosuke was situated to Yu's right, and the girls were together across from them.

"Senpai," Rise began. "We asked to meet up because we're worried about you."

"Worried about me?" Yu seemed puzzled. He glanced at Yosuke for a hint as to why, but Yosuke couldn't think of a way to convey it, so he just pretended he hadn't noticed. He hadn't really had a chance to tell Yu about the girls' persistent questioning; it had started only a few days ago...

"Well, yeah, Yu-kun," said Chie. "We're all really happy for you, but we just can't stand not knowing."

"I'll tell you, then," said Yu. "My favorite Topsicle flavor is the half-and-half berry one."

"Dude," Yosuke said with an unhappy grimace. "That's not what they want."

"Oh." Yu looked crestfallen.

Rise clapped her hands together. "Senpai! We want to know who your girlfriend is! We really want to meet her! We promise we'll welcome her."

"We won't scare her away!" Chie added. "We can all go out for lunch together, and I won't order a steak, haha..."

"Yeah, right," Yosuke said, but the sarcastic response was just rote; his heart wasn't into it. Chie kicked him under the table anyway.

"So please stop keeping it a secret, Senpai!" Rise pleaded.

"Ah," said Yu, and he tilted his head in a thoughtful pose. "You think I have a girlfriend."

"Yes, Senpai!" said Rise.

"I don't." Yu smiled at them, but there wasn't that much humor in it.

Rise frowned. "Senpai. We know you have one. There's no reason to deny it."

"Those hearts you were drawing were pretty serious, Yu-kun," said Chie.

Yu sighed. "The hearts again...?"

"Yeah, really!" Yosuke agreed. "...Maybe you should never have drawn them."

Yu seemed aggrieved, but the girls didn't notice. "Besides that," Chie continued, "we've all noticed you've been happier and more, well, daydreamy than you normally are, Yu-kun. Not that it proves anything, but if you are happy with someone, you know you don't need to hide it from us. We're your friends."

"Tell us, Senpai," Rise begged.

"It couldn't be," said Yu, "that I'm just happy in general because Nanako-chan and my uncle are back from the hospital? That I'm happy we stopped Ameno-sagiri and dispelled the fog? That I'm happy that I got top grades in class once again?"

"Naoto-kun wouldn't help us, but we did some investigating," Chie admitted slowly. "We talked to Nanako-chan, and she totally believes you're in love with someone, but she wouldn't say who."

"You talked to Nanako-chan!?" Yosuke squeaked. It never occurred to him that they'd go that far... Then something far more important became apparent. "Wait... Nanako-chan knows who!?"

Yu's shoulders rumbled, and he snorted loudly and began to laugh, slowly at first, and then with increasing intensity.

"We knew she'd be sensitive to anything involving Yu-kun," Chie explained. "And we thought we'd hit the jackpot, but..."

"We asked her who," said Rise, "but she wouldn't say! It was sooo aggravating."

"She made that little zipping motion over her mouth, you know, like her lips are sealed." Chie demonstrated the motion and Yosuke watched in horrified fascination.

"Well, that's good at least," Yosuke muttered. "I can't believe it... Nanako-chan... knows." We were doing so good, he thought. But dammit, Yu, I told you kids picked up on things like that so quickly!

"So, umm, obviously we know it's a secret," Chie went on, "and, well, Rise-chan is dying to know..."

Yu was trying hard to control his laughter, but he only managed to start gasping heavily for breath instead.

"It's not funny, Senpai!" Rise cried. "We want to know because we care about you, so please just tell us!"

Yu wiped the tears from his eyes, finally calming down. "There's just... there's nothing to tell."

Rise grabbed his wrist from across the table, and pulled him forward. "Senpai. We—"

"Leave him alone!" Yosuke lifted himself from his seat, his palms down on the table, and scowled at them.

The girls turned their heads to look at him, but Rise did not let go of Yu. "Yosuke?" said Chie.

"I've told you both that it's really none of your business," he said. "And you still won't drop it? Will you stop and look at yourself, Rise?"

"Easy for you to say, when you know who it is!" Rise growled and threw Yu's hand away so that she could sit back, cross her arms, and pout. "Senpai's oh-so-important partner. Senpai, how could you tell him and not us?"

Yu pretended not to hear. He brought out some origami paper from his pocket and began to concentrate on folding a paper crane.

"Duh," said Yosuke. "Because I'm a guy. You girls are never going to understand. When it comes to something like this, it's just better if you don't know."

"We're going to find out!" Rise declared. She grabbed the stack of origami paper so that Yu couldn't make any more cranes, so that he had to give her his attention. But instead of looking at her, Yu stared at the spot where the paper had been with a careful, but blank expression.

Yosuke sighed and threw his hands up in exasperation. "Yu doesn't have a girlfriend. All right? End of story."

"You're really going to keep saying that? You as much told us that he does..." Chie frowned.

"Senpai, just tell us already!"

"God, you girls are so dense." Yosuke couldn't help it. He was getting pissed off, and he suspected there was no other way to end this. Even if he walked away from them now, they'd continue bothering Yu another day. Yu might not crack for a long time, but... "Fine. Fine! Yeah, I know who it is."

Rise fixed her eyes on him, her expression somewhat unpleasant, but brighter than it had been a moment ago.

Yosuke tugged on Yu's arm, pulled him in, and kissed him right on the mouth. He then glared at Rise confidently. "There. It's me, all right?" Take that! he thought. "He doesn't have a girlfriend. He has a boyfriend."

Rise hissed and smacked Yosuke so hard from across the table that he fell heavily into Yu, and they both tumbled off the bench seat and onto the ground.

"Senpai is not gay," Rise screamed, "and if you are, Yosuke, well, nobody really cares. But you are going to leave Senpai out of it!"

Somehow in the fall Yosuke ended up flat on Yu's chest. He wanted to scramble away and pretend that he hadn't just outed himself in front of his friends, but damn, he was pissed, and...

...and the look on Yu's face was captivating. Yu was smiling at him with loving approval.

Rise had walked around the table to continue to yell at him, but he didn't hear any of her words.

Yu reached up, put his hand around the back of Yosuke's head, and pulled him down into a passionate kiss.

...and nothing else mattered.

When Yosuke came back down to earth, Rise was nowhere to be seen, and Chie was backing away with her hand over her mouth, but she didn't seem to be too surprised, like it all just suddenly made sense to her. Of course it did. Chie had her moments, but she wasn't stupid. The problem instead was whether or not she approved.

...Which would have to be sorted out later because she totally took off when she saw Yosuke looking back at her.

Yu pulled him back down, not for a kiss, but just to put his head against his chest, to hold him tightly on the ground there. "Yosuke," he murmured. "I'm sorry it came down to this. It's my fault, with the hearts."

"The secret wouldn't have lasted much longer anyway, if Nanako-chan knows." Yosuke sighed.

"I promise I didn't tell her..." Yu murmured.

"I know. She's just a smart girl. You should be proud."

Yu rubbed his back affectionately.

"Besides, Yu... I kind of liked the hearts..." Yosuke admitted. He buried his face in Yu's shirt.

"Ah, there he is, Kanji-ku—" Naoto's voice trailed off.

Yosuke looked up and saw the two approaching, but he didn't even bother trying to get off of Yu.

"—n," Naoto finished. "Well. I see my suspicion is confirmed..." She then took Kanji's arm and firmly pulled him back the way they had come.

"Her 'suspicion'?" Yosuke muttered after she and Kanji were gone. "I thought she'd given up her questioning too easily the other day... Oh, and I guess you can show Hopsuke to Kanji now." Yosuke sighed again.

"Yeah, I was going to ask you what that text was about," said Yu.

They rested comfortably—or uncomfortably, in Yu's case. The concrete couldn't be too pleasant on his back—in that awkward position together for a while in silence.

"Tomorrow is going to be interesting," Yu said eventually.

"No kidding," said Yosuke.

"Are you okay?" Yu asked while ruffling through Yosuke's hair with his hand.

"I'm..." Yosuke swallowed. "Yeah, I'm fine. I... I like you Yu. I'm not ashamed of it."

"I'm glad... We'll work through this together," Yu promised. "Like everything else."

"Yeah, partner." Yosuke looked him in the eyes. "We will."
